CLASS 1A SACRED HEART 80, CADDO HILLS 49

MAGNOLIA — Sacred Heart turned up the intensity early in the second half and broke open a 36-29 game with a 15-0 run en route to an overwhelming first-round victory over Caddo Hills.

Sacred Heart utilized a 1-2-1-1 and a 2-2-1 press that kept Caddo Hills from successfully inbounding the ball on three consecutive occasions at Southern Arkansas University’s W.T. Watson Athletic Center.

“Before we came out of the dressing room [at halftime], we had a couple of our senior captains come to me and say, ‘We feel like we can turn up the pressure,’” Sacred Heart Coach Aaron Duvall said. “So I was like, ‘Well, that’s what we’re going to do; that’s our game plan.’”

The plan worked for the Rebels (32-8). Caddo Hills (22-14) scored the second half’s first basket on Josh Duncan’s layup to cut the lead to 36-29, but Sacred Heart went to work.

Sacred Heart’s full-court press was implemented after Ryan Sutton hit two free throws. A steal led to Blake Beck’s three- pointer and then Andrew Bottoms, Adam Hoyt and Jerry Maus were all beneficiaries of the press, dashing all Caddo Hills’ hopes by pushing the lead to 51-29 with six minutes to go in the third quarter.

“I’m glad we got past tonight, and the nature of the game right now is survive,” Duvall said. “Hopefully we can get enough rest tonight and hopefully play like this against [tonight].”

Maus led Sacred Heart with 27 points, while Hoyt added 11. Caddo Hills was led by Jeffrey Scott’s 13 points.

Bay’s Damien Holt scored 15 first-half points — including four three-pointers — to help the Yellowjackets (28-5) jump out to an early lead and eliminate the Raiders (23-12).

All of Holt’s points came in the first half as Bay faced little resistance. Their 44-26 halftime lead ballooned to 20, and the Raiders maintained a 20- to 25-point advantage throughout the second half until pushing it to 30.

Gunner Freeman added 15 points, while Tyson Oliver and Brad Craft had 10 each. Sparkman was led in scoring by Rit Reed’s 11 points and Nathan Nix’s 10.
