Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
Insulted by his words
Comes now again a disgruntled reader of the Arkansas DemocratGazette to complain about one of its writers, John Brummett. Brummett recently succeeded in insulting the over half-million Southern Baptists living in our great state by calling our biblical stance with regard to gay marriage a “big whoop.” In criticizing Dan Cathy, president of Chick-fil-A, for holding a “regrettably backward and noninclusive view toward the inevitable rise of gay rights to adopt children and marry,” he also, by association, includes Southern Baptists.
I believe Brummett needs to be told by management at the paper that freedom of religion is also accompanied by freedom of speech. We Southern Baptists have been accused of “telling it like it is” and to that charge we plead guilty. We are people of the Bible, as are millions of people around the world—and that book sanctions marriage as being only between one man and one woman—a truth that we will continue to proclaim long after Brummett has faded from the scene.
Brummett then ridiculed the Baptist Press, which interviewed Cathy, as being a “glorified church bulletin.” For his information, and for the rest of the paper’s staff if they don’t know, Baptist Press is a worldwide news wire service owned and operated by the Southern Baptist Convention (16 million-plus members) for gathering and disseminating news to 40 state Baptist newspapers and other groups around the world. How does that compare to the Democrat-Gazette? WILLIAM R. CANARY
