Prudence Hagan
ArkAppella Show Chorus director
“We try to explain to people that barbershop isn’t standing on the corner and singing. We do choreography and sing for all kinds of
events. It’s just so fun.”
Tuesday at Peace Lutheran Church in Rogers.
“The ArkAppella Show Chorus members share a love for music and singing barbershop harmony,” according to spokeswoman Caroline Gershner. “As a member, you too can experience the exhilaration of performing and singing with the ArkAppella Show Chorus. Any woman of average singing ability, with or without vocal training, will find a part that fits her voice range with the help of the chorus’ musical leaders and director.”
“We try to explain to people that barbershop isn’t standing on the corner and singing,” Hagan added. “We do choreography and sing for all kinds of events. It’s just so fun.”
A graduate of the University of Minnesota in Mankato, Hagan, who grew up in Iowa, has settled happily in to Bella Vista with her husband, Jan, taking time off from her commercial insurance underwriting career and learning to play golf. But she loves Sweet Adelines so much that in addition to directing the ArkAppella Show Chorus, she also sings in a long-distance quartet — with her sister and another set of sisters. Two live in Las Vegas and the third in Portland, Ore.
“We focus on a lot of competition singing,” she said. But would-be Sweet Adelines don’t have to aspire to that level.
“It’s the camaraderie,” she said again. “Learning to harmonize together just accentuates the camaraderie.”
