Calendar of networks’ fall premieres begins today
The new fall season officially begins in two weeks. However, there will be early debuts for some shows (especially on Fox), and others will be held back a bit (mostly by The CW) to avoid the rush.
Not counting NBC’s limited-run trivia show The Million Second Quiz, there will be 28 new fall series. Check out my overview of them on today’s section front.
For handy reference (clip and save), here are the premiere days and times of all the fall broadcast network shows through early November (new offerings in bold type) along with a few selected cable stalwarts.
Note: Some veteran shows have moved to new nights, so don’t assume your old favorite will return at the same time. Today 6 p.m.: Football Night in America (NBC).

The Million Second Quiz with host Ryan Seacrest lasts, well, a million seconds between Monday and Sept. 19.
Here’s the prime- time schedule: a live hour nightly Monday through Saturday at 7 p.m. Then a break, coming back at 7 p.m. Sept. 16 through 18. The two-hour finale will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 19.
NBC is hoping Quiz will turn into event TV. There’s a giant three-story hourglass thing where contestants sit in the “money chair” and answer trivia for 12 consecutive days and nights. Each second in the chair wins $10.
After a million seconds, the top four money winners plus the final person in the money chair will battle in a grand finale for a record-setting $2 million grand prize.
I’m betting that’s somewhere around $900,000 after taxes.
Why is NBC doing a live nightly show at this time? First of all, viewers can play along at home and it’s a platform to promote its new fall shows, which kick in on the 23rd. Of course, if it’s a hit, it’ll be a wet blanket on the premiere of Fox’s X Factor on Wednesday and Thursday.
