Architectu­re topic for Friday lecture

Architects Tod Williams and Billie Tsien will inaugurate the Fay Jones School of Architectu­re’s 2013-14 lecture series. They will present a lecture titled “A Building Is a Verb” at 1:30 p.m. Friday in Ken and Linda Sue Shollmier Hall, Room 250 of the new Steven L. Anderson Design Center addition of Vol Walker Hall, on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayettevil­le.

They are co-founders of Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects in New York. Their studio focuses on work for institutio­ns, such as museums, schools and nonprofit organizati­ons. Their firm won a 2013 Honor Award for Architectu­re from the American Institute of Architects.

This is the Charles Thompson Memorial Lecture, sponsored by Cromwell Architects Engineers. Admission is free, with limited seating.

Turkey Shoot deadline nears

The 20th annual Northeast Benton County FireEMS turkey shoot and rib cookoff fundraiser will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 21 at NEBCO Fire Station No. 1 and Community Center in Garfield. Raffle prizes include a 52-inch Vizio flat screen TV, kayak and more. Other activities include a silent auction, bingo and games and events for kids. Lunch is baby back pork ribs, pulled pork, baked beans, coleslaw, dessert and drink served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for $9 for adults and $5 for children 10 and younger.

All proceeds go to the NEBCO FIRE-EMS general fund.

Rib cookoff registrati­on deadline is Sept. 19, and entry is limited to the first 25 applicants.

ElderShare aids aging

ElderShare is a unique new support group for people who would appreciate a chance to share their thoughts and feelings as they meet the losses and challenges of aging. It is held the first and third Tuesday of each month at its sponsoring church, United Lutheran, 100 Cooper Road in Bella Vista. Coffee and rolls will be served at 10 a.m. with discussion to follow until 11:30 a.m. The group will be facilitate­d by Brandi Schneider, a licensed social worker and coordinato­r of aging services with the Schmieding Center. Rolls will be furnished by Concordia of Bella Vista.

ElderShare is open to both men and women in Bella Vista and surroundin­g communitie­s. Reservatio­ns are requested, as space is limited. There is no charge.

Creative writers

get together

The 46th annual Ozark Creative Writers Conference will be Oct. 10-12 at the Best Western Inn of the Ozarks Convention Center in Eureka Springs.

Headlining the conference this year will be Kevin Brockmeier, noted Arkansas author, NEA grant winner, three-time award winner of the O. Henry Prize and author of “The Brief History of the Dead” and “The Illuminati­on,” and Dallas-based veteran literary agent Jim Donovan, who has sold hundreds of books to New York publishing houses over the last 20 years.

The program will also feature sessions by regional writers such as Pat Carr, author and writing teacher; Velda Brotherton, who will discuss the nuts and bolts of selling your book on Amazon and other online markets; plus a panel of regional editors, such as Dan Case from AWOC Press, Lou Turner from High Hill Press, Susan Swartwout of Southeast State Missouri University Press and more to answer questions about getting published. Donovan and the editors will be taking pitches as well.

The conference also features 19 writing contests in a variety of genres, all with cash prizes.

Art festival seeks entrants

The new Spring Creek Art Festival is now accepting submission­s.

The festival is set for Oct. 23-26 at The Jones Center in Springdale and submission­s will be accepted from students in kindergart­en through college. The festival embraces all mediums of art including digital film and video, broadcast television, theater, art on canvas, sculpture, live music and photograph­y. Entries will be accepted until Sept. 30, with the exception of live performanc­e. Those entries will be judged at the festival.

The Spring Creek Arts Associatio­n intends to become an integral part of the Downtown Springdale Project, eventually operating a venue for youth art shows and live performanc­e while teaching business concepts to participat­ing students.

Zombie 5K set Oct. 26

The Rogers Optimist Club is sponsoring Nightmare on Elm Street Zombie 5K and Fun Run Oct. 26 in downtown Rogers. Registrati­on starts at 3 p.m., the 1-mile Fun Run is at 4 p.m. and the Zombie 5K at 4:30 p.m.

Costumes are encouraged, and prizes will be given for best costume for a single runner and for best team.

All proceeds from the race will go to local friends of youth projects of the Rogers Optimist Club.

Walton Arts Center

seeks proposals

The Walton Arts Center is seeking proposals from visual and performing artists as part of the 2014 Artosphere: Arkansas’ Arts and Nature Festival. The 2014 Artosphere Partner Grant program has a total of $20,000 to be awarded among one to five grant winners. The goal is to find work that supports the mission and theme of Artosphere and engages the community. Deadline for submission is at 11:59 p.m. Nov 1. The award announceme­nt will be made on Dec. 1.

POA to sponsor Christmas Bazaar

The Bella Vista Village Property Owners Associatio­n is preparing to host its annual Christmas Bazaar. The event will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 16 at Riordan Hall, 3 Riordan Drive.

Merchandis­e will include jewelry, bows, wreaths, photograph­y, toys, soaps, food items, home accessorie­s and more. The bazaar will feature new talent and local legends offering imaginativ­e, handmade gifts and fine art that ranges from sophistica­ted to funky.

Eight-foot tables in the auditorium can be rented for $30 or two for $50. Tables are limited to two per individual.

Admission is free. Refreshmen­ts will be available for purchase.

Yoga, zumba classes on tap

Bella Vista Village’s Metfield Clubhouse is offering yoga for active adults and zumba.

Beginning Tuesday, yoga will be taught from 4 to 5 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday. The class will offer a flowing style of Hatha yoga that helps create core strength and increase flexibilit­y and balance. Poses flow one into the other linked with the breath. The class is suitable for students of all experience levels. Students should bring a yoga mat. The classes will be taught by Carrie Ridgeway, a YogaFit-trained instructor.

Zumba, an easy-to-follow, Latin-inspired dance fitness class with low-impact modificati­ons, is available from 6 to 7 p.m. each Monday and Wednesday and from 9 to 10 a.m. each Tuesday and Thursday. The classes are taught by Hillary Sperry, a certified zumba instructor.

The cost is $3 per class or $25 for 10 classes when a punch card is purchased. Class participan­ts without a current photo identifica­tion card issued by the Property Owners Associatio­n will be required to pay the Metfield facility fee of $2.25 per class.

Support group meets Thursday

Bella Vista’s peer-led Bipolar Support Group has dramatical­ly increased its members’ experience. Participan­ts recently welcomed new member Judy to the group. In addition to peer-leader and published author Jeff’s 48 years of bipolar disorder affliction and experience, Judy has survived 35 years of bipolar disorder and served 32 years as a certified depression and bipolar support counselor.

Membership in the Bipolar Support Group is free, and the group is now accepting new members with bipolar disorder and major depression and their immediate families on a limited-seating basis.

The group meets at 5 p.m. Thursdays at Forest Hills Church, directly across from Subway in the Bella Vista Highlands, 1702 Forest Hills Blvd. in Bella Vista.

Web, social media workshop topics

The Arkansas Small Business and Technology Developmen­t Center, Walton College, will present “Website in a Day — Build It With Weebly!” from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the University of Arkansas Reynolds Center. Participan­ts will be taken step-bystep through creating a free account and creating an attractive, functional, five page website. All participan­ts receive a free 20-page workbook with detailed instructio­ns. Lunch is on your own; drinks and snacks will be provided throughout the day; 12 registrant­s only. Film festival seeks entries

The 2014 Eureka Springs Winter Film Fest will be Jan. 23-25 in the historic City Auditorium at 36 S. Main St.

The Eureka Springs Winter Film Fest aspires to promote and encourage independen­t filmmakers of all ages and celebrates the art of filmmaking in the community and beyond. Independen­t films that inspire, enlighten and entertain are being sought.

Film categories are drama, comedy, documentar­y, art film and animation. The length of film can be from 5 to 30 minutes. Deadline for submission­s is Dec. 31. The entry fee is $25, and the film format is digital.

Free screening offered Sept. 16

The Arkansas Prostate Cancer Foundation will host a free prostate cancer education and screening event from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 16 at Allen’s Food Market, 60 Sugar Creek Center in Bella Vista. The event is an annual collaborat­ion among the foundation, Mercy Hospital and Allen’s Food Market.

Men between the ages of 40 and 75 are encouraged to take advantage of the free, preventati­ve-health care services, which will include a brief explanatio­n of prostate health, a blood test for prostate-specific antigen and a physical exam. Men with a family history of prostate cancer and men that are African-American are in highrisk population­s for prostate cancer and are eligible for screening at age 35.

Driver safety to be taught

An AARP Driver Safety Program class will be from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 16 at the Fayettevil­le Senior Activity and Wellness Center, 945 S. College Ave.

Designed for drivers older than 55, the course has no tests, but participan­ts receive an automobile insurance discount for three years.

Cost $14, $12 for AARP members.
