Cowboys bring back Long

The Dallas Cowboys have signed defensive tackle Jerome Long and placed defensive end Ben Bass on season-ending injured reserve with a dislocated shoulder. The Cowboys brought back Long on Saturday, a week after he was among the final cuts. He provides depth on a line that is likely to be without two starters for the opener against the New York Giants tonight. There are now two backups on injured reserve. Bass worked as a starter early in training camp a year after making the roster out of rookie camp. He battled injuries throughout camp this year before injuring his left shoulder in practice Thursday. Long spent most of last season on Kansas City’s practice squad after getting drafted in the seventh round.

The Tennessee Titans have placed fullback Quinn Johnson on injured reserve and replaced the veteran by promoting Collin Mooney from the practice squad. Johnson practiced Wednesday, but a quadriceps injury kept him out Thursday and Friday. The Titans worked out fullbacks Michael Robinson and

John Conner on Friday but decided to promote Mooney. The New York Jets have released Brady Quinn, leaving rookie starter Geno Smith and backup Matt Simms as the team’s only healthy quarterbacks for the season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The move Saturday had been expected because Coach Rex Ryan prefers to not have three quarterbacks active for games — and it prevents Quinn’s salary from being guaranteed. Quinn was signed by the Jets on Monday to provide a veteran presence at the position with Mark Sanchez sidelined with a shoulder injury. It’s likely the Jets will re-sign Quinn early next week. Linebacker Danny Lansanah, who had an outstanding training camp, was promoted from the practice squad.

The Oakland Raiders have activated offensive tackle Matt Mc

Cants off the practice squad and placed offensive tackle Jared Veldheer on the injured reserve list with a designation to return. The Raiders made the move Saturday to give them a healthy backup tackle for the season opener today in Indianapolis. Veldheer had surgery for a torn left triceps last month. He will be eligible to start practicing in six weeks and could play as early as Nov. 3 against Philadelphia if he has recovered. Rookie Menelik Watson was supposed to start in Veldheer’s place at left tackle but is out after injuring his knee in practice. Right tackle Khalif Barnes will move to the left side and newly signed Tony

Pashos will start at right tackle. The New England Patriots resigned running back-kick returner Leon Washington and signed offensive lineman Josh Kline to the 53-man roster from the practice squad Saturday. Defensive lineman

A.J. Francis was released, and the Patriots signed offensive lineman

Braxston Cave to the practice squad. Washington, 30, was signed by the Patriots as a free agent in March after he left Seattle, where he was a key contributor on special teams. A seven-year veteran, Washington shares the NFL record with Josh Cribbs with eight career kickoff returns for touchdowns. He also tied an NFL record when he returned two kicks for a touchdown against San Diego in 2010.

Departing wins Super Derby

Departing used a strong stretch run to overtake Ruler of Love and win the $500,000 Grade II Super Derby at Louisiana Downs on Saturday night, giving trainer Al Stall

Jr. his record third victory in the race. A 1-5 favorite ridden by Robby Albarado, Departing charged from third on the final turn. Ruler of Love finished second in the seven-horse field, followed by Cameo

Appearance. Departing covered the 11/ 8- mile course in 1:50.08, ultimately winning by four lengths. Departing also won this year’s Grade II West Virginia Derby. The gelding paid $2.60, $2.10 and $2.10 for the Super Derby victory. Ruler of Love returned $5.80 and $4.00, and Cameo Appearance paid $3.60 to show. Albarado also won the Super Derby in 2006 aboard Strong Contender. Stall won the race with My Pal Charlie in 2008 and Apart in 2010.

Hyper rallied to beat Finnegans Wake by a half-length Saturday in the $250,000 Bowling Green Handicap, the opening day feature at Belmont Park in New York. Javier

Castellano guided Hyper to a wide but clean trip to notch his 10 win in 21 starts. Boisterous, the 3-5 favorite, wasn’t as fortunate. He lost all momentum when forced to slam on the brakes turning for home, nicking the hedge to avoid running up the heels of a rival. He recovered to get third. Hyper, trained by Chad

Brown, paid $7.90, $4.20 and $2.30 as the 5-2 second choice. Finnegans Wake returned $5.20 and $2.60 while Boisterous paid $2.10 to show.

Caps re-sign C Johansson

The Washington Capitals have resigned restricted free agent center

Marcus Johansson to a two-year, $4 million contract. The Capitals announced Saturday that Johansson will earn $1.825 million next season and $2.175 million in 2014-15. Johansson, 22, had 6 goals and 16 assists in 34 games last season. He missed part of the season with a concussion but returned to play well at the end skating on the top line with Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom. Johansson was a first-round draft pick by the Capitals in 2009.
