Oregon State QB tosses 4 TD passes
OREGON STATE 33, HAWAII 14
CORVALLIS, Ore. — Sean Mannion threw for 372 yards and four touchdowns and Oregon State rebounded from a stunning loss in their season opener with a 33-14 victory over Hawaii on Saturday.
Brandin Cooks had 7 catches for 92 yards and 2 scores for the Beavers (1-1), who lost 49-46 at home last week to lower division Eastern Washington.
Oregon State had 508 yards of total offense while Hawaii (0-2) had just 239.
The Rainbow Warriors tied it at 14-14 in the second quarter before Oregon State went ahead in the second half on Mannion’s two 8-yard touchdown passes to Cooks. Hawaii was coming off a 30-13 loss to USC in its opener.
The Beavers scored on their first drive, a 3- yard pass from Mannion to Kellen Clute. The play was set up when Mannion tossed to Storm Woods, who broke downfield for a 48-yard reception.
The Rainbow Warriors were hurt on the ensuing kickoff when senior linebacker Brenden Daley was injured in a collision and was taken from the field by ambulance. Daley was taken to the hospital with a concussion.
In the opener against Southern California, Daley led Hawaii with 10 tackles, including 4 for loss, 1 sack and 1 fumble.
The Beavers went up 14-0 after Mannion found Richard Mullaney with a 19-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter, but Oregon State was not without some of the mistakes that cost them the week before against the Eagles. Mannion was intercepted by Julian Gener, who ran it back 23 yards for the touchdown to narrow it to 14-7.
In other games involving Pacific-12 teams, freshman quarterback Jared Goff passed for 485 yards and two touchdowns to give Coach Sonny Dykes his first victory at California (1-1) while leading the Golden Bears to a 37-30 victory over Portland State (1-1) in Berkeley, Calif. Goff completed 31 of 58 attempts and was 19 yards shy of breaking the school’s single-game passing record. ... Travis Wilson had two long touchdown runs and threw for three more touchdowns, all in the first half, and Utah (2-0) exploded for a 70-7 victory over Weber
State. The game marked the most points by the Utes since an 82-6 victory over Texas-El Paso in 1973. Wilson, a sophomore, completed 14 of 19 passes for 264 yards and added 93 yards on just three carries.
