Questions applicants should ask themselves before the interview

As an employment professional, I have answered many queries from job seekers about what questions to expect in a job interview.

There’s another side to the equation, however. Here are a few questions applicants should ask themselves before going into any job interview.

1. Am I ready for the interview?

Today, you should expect to go through more interviews with more people than ever before.

One person can stop you from being hired. Practice answering every possible question you think you may be asked. Research employers thoroughly and show your knowledge of them.

2. Does my network know I am looking for a job?

You need a list of everyone who knows you are looking and another list of those who should know that you’re looking.

Your second list should include decision-makers at the employers you’re targeting. Take the necessary steps to make your name known to them.

3. Will the interviewer remember me?

Standing out from the rest of the applicants will improve your chances for being considered. Make use of portfolios, outstanding reference letters, pictures of events — anything that shows your accomplishments. Now is not the time to be shy! Toot your own horn.

4. Am I being flexible?

You should do the type of work you want, but you need to realize that there are many applicants who are willing to do anything to get the job. Be prepared to sign on for contract work, temporary positions, etc., just to get a foot in the door.
