Brewers take eighth in row, sneaking past Pirates

BREWERS 3, PIRATES 2

MILWAUKEE — Carlos Gomez hit a leadoff home run, Jonathan Lucroy drove in the tiebreakin­g run with an eighth-inning single and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 Saturday night for their eighth consecutiv­e victory.

Gomez got Milwaukee started with a 432-foot drive to center field off Edinson Volquez, and Khris Davis scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0 in the second.

Pittsburgh tied it in the third on Starling Marte’s groundout and Travis Snider’s single, snapping Yovani Gallardo’s scoreless streak to start the season at 142/ innings. Gallardo

3 struck out Pedro Alvarez to end the inning with two runners in scoring position. The right-hander then held the Pirates scoreless over the next three innings, striking out the side in the fifth.

Lucroy singled to right in the eighth to drive in Ryan Braun, who slid in ahead of the throw to the plate.

Jim Henderson (1-0) pitched a scoreless inning of relief for the victory. Francisco Rodriguez got his fourth save in four attempts.

Gallardo went six innings, giving up two runs and six hits. He struck out six and walked one. He is 11-4 in his career against the Pirates.

Volquez, making his second start of the season along with one relief appearance, gave up two runs and four hits in 61/ innings. He struck

3 out four and walked two.

TWINS 7, ROYALS 1 Joe Mauer hit his first home run of the season and Ricky Nolasco earned his first victory for host Minnesota in a victory over Kansas City. Nolasco (1-1) was on top of his game Saturday in his first home start for Minnesota, going 8 innings and allowing 5 hits with 4 strikeouts.

INDIANS 12, WHITE SOX 6 Ryan Raburn hit a tiebreakin­g, two-run single with two outs in the seventh inning, leading visiting Cleveland to a victory over Chicago. Nick Swisher, Jason Kipnis and David Murphy hit home runs for Cleveland, which snapped a three-game losing streak.

YANKEES 7, RED SOX 4 Brian McCann put an emphatic end to his season-opening slump, hitting his first two home runs for host New York to help beat John Lackey and Boston.
