■ Masoud Soltanifar , Iran’s top tourism official, said the Islamic nation’s thriving tourist industry saw 4.5 million foreign visitors in the 12 months ended in March, a 35 percent jump over a year earlier, generating about $6 billion in revenue.
■ Krista Marieann Boseley , 30, an aspiring model from Vancouver, British Columbia, and pilot Gilles Lapointe, 61, were arrested on federal drug charges in Southern California after authorities said the pair arrived from Las Vegas in a private jet carrying 50,000 Ecstasy pills and about 90 pounds of raw MDMA, a powder used in the drug.
■ Sulak Sivaraksa , 82, a Thai scholar, was charged with insulting the monarchy and faces up to 15 years in prison over comments he made about the country’s King Naresuan, who died in 1605.
■ Paul Noland Shows , 27, of Chickasaw, Ala., was charged in nearby Saraland with attempting to elude an officer and reckless endangerment, after he reportedly jumped from his vehicle and leapt off a bridge into the Mobile-Tensaw River Delta to evade a police officer who was attempting to pull him over for an improper lane change.
■ Marek Biernacki , a Polish lawmaker, said a high-ranking army officer and a civilian arrested on espionage charges worked for Russia’s military intelligence services.
■ Luz Pabellon , 73, of New York found that because of an error made when election officials filed her voter registration electronically, her official voting card lists her birth year as 1850, misstating her age by 91 years.
■ Peter Szijjarto , Hungary’s foreign minister, said there are no plans to investigate corruption allegations that have led the U.S. to ban entry to several Hungarian citizens, including government officials, adding that his country has not received “credible information from the U.S. government.”
■ Sherrie Baldwin , a reptile rescuer from Salem, Ore., who was threatened with eviction from her mobile home park after she made news in August for giving CPR to one of her 24 bearded dragons, said she has received an outpouring of support from people across the country who have volunteered to take the pet lizards.
■ Jonas Wikstrom ,a Swedish military official, said naval vessels, aircraft and home guard forces were dispatched to the Stockholm archipelago to investigate reports of “foreign underwater activity.”
