4.4 quake shakes Oklahoma, region

OKLAHOMA CITY — A magnitude 4.4 earthquake centered on northern Oklahoma shook the state Monday afternoon, with reports of it being felt hundreds of miles away in neighborin­g states, including Arkansas.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported the temblor hit at about 3:20 p.m., with the epicenter located about 9 miles east of Cherokee near the Kansas border.

People reported feeling the quake in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and Texas.

The Alfalfa County sheriff’s office said there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

According to the Oklahoma Geological Survey, a magnitude 4.4 earthquake would be among the top 10 strongest earthquake­s recorded in the state.

The strongest Oklahoma earthquake on record is a 5.6 quake centered in Prague in November 2011.
