Belief behind symbols
Symbols can mean different things to different people, as we all can see with the current situation involving the Confederate battle flag. Some want it banned, some want it to remain. Banning a symbol is one thing; eradicating the emotion or belief behind that symbol is a totally different matter.
Let us look at some other symbols. The Klan burns the Christian cross in their ceremonies and in the yards of those they hate. Is this symbol to be banned due to the corruption of its use? The Stars and Stripes has flown over slavery—yes, slavery was legal in the United States, not just the Confederacy—and this flag flew over horrible acts against Native Americans. Is it to be banned?
Please tread carefully when considering these issues, for once they start, they can take a life of their own. DAVID KELLEY
