42 states now accept digital proof of auto insurance

-

Many people find themselves carrying an old, outdated insurance card around in their wallet. Some don’t even remember the last time they put an updated insurance card in the glove box of their vehicle. The problem is, what then can be shown to a police officer if an accident occurs or the motorist is stopped for a traffic violation?

Shelter Insurance has a mobile app to assist their clients out, and the number of states accepting these digital auto insurance cards today is on the rise.

As of May, there are 42 states that permit drivers to show their “e-cards” at traffic stops, according to the Property Casualty Insurance Association (PCI). PCI is a strong supporter of these digital cards and states that “electronic proof of insurance coverage is the wave of the future.”

Within Shelter Insurance’s 14-state operating territory, 13 accept e-cards that can be obtained using the mobile app. These states include: Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Tennessee.

Those traveling out of state can check out the attached map of all the current states that are now accepting electronic auto insurance ID cards.
