Piscotty to be called up

-

St. Louis Cardinals General Manager John Mozeliak confirmed Monday to the St. Louis

Post-Dispatch that outfielder Stephen Piscotty is being promoted to the Cardinals. But Mozeliak said no official roster move will be announced until today, when the Cardinals play the first of two interleague games in Chicago against the White Sox.

Piscotty, an outfielder who recently was given some first-base assignments at Class AAA Memphis, is hitting .272 with 11 home runs and 41 runs batted in for the Redbirds. He hit .288 with 9 home runs and 69 RBI last year for Memphis.

With the designated hitter available against the White Sox and two lefthanders pitching for Chicago, Piscotty, 24, would figure to see action as a DH, in the outfield or possibly at first base. Matt Holliday likely will be the designated hitter for at least one of the two games, so Piscotty more likely will turn up in the field as the Cardinals try to jump-start an inconsistent offense.

The right-handed hitter, a recent graduate at Stanford, was a supplemental first-round pick by the Cardinals in 2012. He will have to be added to the 40-man roster.

In other Cardinals news, Manager Mike Matheny said right-hander Michael Wacha would be moved up a day to start today and that Wednesday’s starter was undecided.

Bu Matheny said he was leaning toward moving up all his starters since Carlos Martinez relieved for four innings in Sunday’s 18-inning loss to the New York Mets. That would make Lance Lynn the starter in Wednesday’s game.
