Fort Smith man arrested after shooting

FORT SMITH — Police arrested Derrick Scott Haynes, 18, on Wednesday, in the early morning shooting of a 17-year-old boy.

Police received at call at 1:55 a.m. about a shooting at Martin Luther King Park, 1815 Greenwood Ave. At the scene, they found a .40-caliber handgun and spent shell casing, according to a news release.

Shortly afterward, a local hospital reported a male had been brought into the emergency room with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

“The victim was rushed into surgery and is currently in intensive care,” the release said.

Police didn’t name the victim because he’s a minor. Haynes was identified as a “person of interest,” according to the release.

At about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, police received informatio­n Haynes was at a home on North 47th Terrace.

Kimmons Junior High School was put on temporary lockdown while the Fort Smith SWAT team searched the home, but Haynes wasn’t found there.

At about 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, police found Haynes at a home on South Q Street. He was taken to the Fort Smith Police Department and arrested on probable cause of committing first-degree battery, according to the news release.

Haynes was held at the Sebastian County jail without bond.

The investigat­ion is continuing.
