Tips for fall gardening, landscaping
Here are suggestions and tips to help make things a little easier with landscaping and gardening this fall, courtesy of Bradford
Yard Living Plus Landscaping.
• Fall is a good time to plant trees such as red maple, oak, dogwood, redbud and others.
• Common blooming fall flowers include mums, pansies, dianthus and snapdragons.
• Lawn renovation can be done at this time. Winterize your lawn and overseed fescue lawns.
• Fall vegetables that can still be grown include lettuce, radishes, spinach, kale and turnips.
• It’s time to move plants inside, particularly those in pottery, potting soil and plant caddies.
• Use fall plants as decorations, such as straw bales, corn stalks and pumpkins. Local farms, farmer’s markets and pumpkin patches may have such items available for sale.
• Mulch and compost can be purchased in bulk or bagged to use in winterizing lawns and gardens. Bradford Yard Living Plus Landscaping can deliver and/or install mulch and compost.
• Stay Warm. Have firewood picked up or delivered in preparation for those cold, winter days.
• Do something for the birds. Prepare birdbaths, heaters, feeders and suet for them.
• Irrigation winterization and landscape cleanup need to be done.
• Hopefully it’s not needed, but it’s a good time to stock up on frost blankets, ice melt, and snow shovels
The staff at Bradford Yard Living Plus Landscaping says that fall is also the ideal time to aerate lawns. Aeration improves air fl ow to created a thick and healthy lawn.
They recommend using gypsum, which is a natural way to aerate the lawn as opposed to mechanical aeration. Applying 40 pounds per 2,000 square feet in the fall should get the job done.
