Alma 27, LR Catholic 16

Quarterback Noah Dotson passed for 147 yards and 2 touchdowns and running back Landon Brigance had a 98yard touchdown run to lead led Alma to a come-from-behind 27-16 victory over Little Rock Catholic at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock on Friday night.

Dotson also passed for 147 yards, rushed for 95 yards, but and threw 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Brigance rushed for 129 yards, including a 98-yard touchdown, and also had a 35-yard touchdown reception on a pass from Dotson. Dotson’s other touchdown pass was 23 yards to Heath Friddle.

Catholic ( 1- 3, 0- 1 7A/ 6A Central) scored twice started off hot with two touchdowns in the first quarter, once on a 20-yard pass from Taylor Price to Thompson Olaimey after a short drive after intercepting-following a Dotson pass pick, and a 14-yard run by Lance Harville-Thomas, thanks to an Alma fumble which came just a play after Alma fumbled the ball.

But after the shaky start starting off shakily, the Airedales (3-1, 1-0 7A/6A Central) did just a bit more right on Friday night. Brigance’s long touchdown run big rushing touchdown came a play after back-to-back interceptions, and Alma slowly dug its way out of the 14-0 hole.

Catholic still led 14-13 at the break and got scored a safety on the first play of the third quarter, but then couldn’t get a rhythm going again.

Meanwhile, Alma strung together a few long drives, trading punts with Catholic, until backup quarterback Alex Beneux capped a 17-play, 84-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

A few minutes later, the Dotson threw the 35-yard touchdown to Brigance to cement the Airedales’ lead. Then Alma ran out the clock with a long drive in the fourth quarter that ended in a fumble but left the Rockets deep in their own territory with less than two minutes to play.

Both teams made plenty of mistakes. The Rockets (1-3, 0-1 6A/7A Central) were penalized 8 times for 55 yards, and quarterback Taylor Price was intercepted-picked off once. The Airedales (3-1, 1-0 6A/7A Central) were penalized 5 times for 31 yards, and turned the ball over four times, including losing two fumbles.

Aidan Walker made three of his four extra-point kicks for Alma, and Christopher Elser made both of his kicks for Catholic.

The victory was the first of the season for the Tigers, who opened the season with nonconference losses to Gentry, Berryville and Prairie Grove.

“That’s been our call all week, 1-0,” said West Fork coach Brad Lindley, whose team won the 3A- 1 title last year with a 7-0 mark. “We had three tough losses coming in, but we were very concentrated on getting off the conference season with a big win and just keep improving from there.”

Pottsville 14

Elyas Carter passed for two touchdowns and Chris Kershner rushed for two more as Dardanelle opened 4-4A conference play with a win over Pottsville (2-2, 0-1).

Bryant 27, Russellville 24

For nearly all 48 minutes of Friday’s 6A/7A Central opener between Bryant and Russellville, it wasn’t quite clear who was in control.

As soon as one team made a move to take the upper hand, the opponent responded with something to steal the momentum right back. The only difference was, the Hornets had Phillip IsomGreen, and the junior knew how to steal the spotlight, providing an 87-yard kickoff return with 40.6 seconds remaining.

The 4- 0 Hornets were stunned by an incredible start from the host Cyclones, who picked up a 42-yard field goal from Nate Turner on their first drive and capped their second with a 27-yard strike from Ryan Talley to Caleb Stokes. The excitement didn’t stop there either, as Josiah Woodard short-circuited the Hornets’ solid start to their next drive by jumping a screen route and scampering 52 yards for a pick-six and the 17-0 lead.

Eventually, the ground and pound from Bryant took its toll. A 15-play, 70yard drive gave it its first points on a field goal, 10 plays and 74 yards gave the Hornets their first touchdown, and 10 plays — all runs — covered 73 yards and was capped by a 7-yard run by Cameron Coleman that was finished off by the offensive line.
