Mike who? SI cover fails name game
Michigan State Coach Mark Dantonio has the Spartans in the College Football Playoff, but
Sports Illustrated couldn’t get his name right. This week, one of Sports
Illustrated’s regional covers features Michigan State on the cover with a photo of quarterback Connor Cook and a headline that reads, “How Mike Dantonio Rebuilt the Spartans.” That’s “Mike,” not “Mark.” Michael Rosenberg, who wrote the Michigan State piece, apologized for his magazine’s error on Twitter.
“Our fault,” Rosenberg said. “We’re re-printing. As you might imagine, I don’t write or see covers before printing. The story has it correct.”
Several Spartans fans were outraged at the magazine for the error, and one fan thanked Rosenberg for “the bulletin board material.” “Ha,” Rosenberg replied to the fan. “There is no room left on the bulletin board at this point, and anyway you can’t see the board behind all those trophies.”
Sports Illustrated issued a correction this week.
“On one of the covers of Sports Illustrated’s special newsstand-only College Football Playoff Preview issue — there are regional editions for each of the four teams — Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio was misidentified. The Spartans-themed issues are being reprinted and will be available on newsstands shortly. Sports Illustrated apologizes to Mark Dantonio, Michigan State and its fans for the error.”
Steve Schrader of the Detroit Free Press made light of the error Thursday.
“Maybe it should be a drinking game, any time they mess up his name,” he wrote.
Broken bowls?
Christopher L. Gasper of the Boston Globe believes the college football bowl system is a waste of time.
”There are some compelling bowl matchups outside of the College Football Playoff: Stanford vs. Iowa in the Rose Bowl, Notre Dame against Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl, Baylor and North Carolina in the Russell Athletic Bowl. Oregon and TCU fighting to put up a score worthy of a San Antonio Spurs game in the Alamo Bowl is worth watching,” Gasper wrote.
“But most of these bowl games are as inane and regrettable as their corporate names.
“Quick, who is playing in the prestigious Quick Lane Bowl? It’s Central Michigan and Minnesota, a waiver recipient.
“Sadly, the college football bowl game has evolved into the participation trophy of North American sports.
“Everybody gets one.”
They said it ...
NBC’s Seth Meyers, on singer Adele’s new world tour including six bookings at Madison Square Garden, home of the NBA’s New York Knicks: “As if the people in that building don’t cry enough already.”
Comedy writer Alan Ray, on the Philadelphia 76ers rebuilding: “Sort of like they do at FEMA.”
Comedy writer Tim Hunter, on baseball pariah Pete Rose, banned for gambling, losing his longshot bid for reinstatement: “I wonder how much money Pete lost on that one.”
Funny man
From Brad Dickson of the Omaha (Neb.) World-Herald:
“Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt is still playing with a broken hand. This sounds like the commissioner’s latest parity plan.”
“Now Watt only takes off half the quarterback’s head.”
“Some are calling for a reevaluation of the college bowl games. I think once the gift bags became worth more than the GNPs of several nations, it was time.”
“The Golden State Warriors lost their first game last week. You know how it goes in sports. Rumors immediately spread that the coach would be fired.”
“A panel fell from a passing airliner near the seventh hole of a North Carolina golf course. The panel didn’t hit anyone. But if it did, there were approximately 260 doctors playing the course.”
