HELPFUL HINTS

- Send a money- or time-saving hint to Heloise, P.O. Box 795000, San Antonio, Texas 78279-5000; fax to (210) 435-6473; or email Heloise@Heloise.com

DEAR HELOISE: I work for a large discount retailer. A lady called because she thought her cellphone had been lost or stolen in the store. Here’s what she told me: A man had bumped into her, and then a woman started chatting with her. This is a common scam. Thieves and pickpockets often work in pairs or in teams. One will distract you while the other steals from you.

Fortunately, the lady called me back and reported that she had just misplaced her phone.

However, here are some hints to thwart pickpockets:

Be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Keep your purse zipped closed with your wallet, keys and phone secured inside. Don’t use outside slip pockets on the purse to stow valuables.

Don’t set your bag or purse in your cart.

— A Reader, via email DEAR READER: If you can, don’t take your whole purse into a store, just your wallet, list and keys. Don’t put it in the trunk while in the parking lot if people can see you. Stuff it under a seat or cover it with something.

Do listen to your “gut”: If something does not feel right, someone is getting too close to you or you feel uncomfortable, go to another aisle. Go to the front of the store and chat with a manager.

Also, with summer just about here, theme parks, sporting events and busy vacation spots are the places you need to have your “antenna” up and be aware.

P. S.: When I travel for business I am really on alert mode. Don’t set your purse down while checking luggage or buying something. Don’t leave your tote or purse hanging on the back of a chair. Do keep count of belongings, children and tickets!

DEAR HELOISE: Please reprint your hint for pre-wash spray.

— Julie C., Valparaiso, Ind. DEAR READER: I’d be happy to print it. What’s great is that it’s cheap to make and safe to use.

Mix equal parts of water, household ammonia and hand dishwashing liquid (not dishwasher detergent).

An example is half cup water, half cup ammonia and half cup dish liquid.

Pour into a clean spray bottle, and label the bottle. Apply to the stain and rub gently, then launder right away. This formula is safe for washable fabrics.
