100 YEARS AGO Sept. 3, 1916

The plant of the McBride Stave Company, east of Argenta, was destroyed by fire discovered at 1 o’clock this (Sunday) morning. The loss is estimated at $5,000, with no insurance. The plant is outside the city limits. The Argenta Fire Department responded to the call, but the plant was destroyed when it arrived. The fire apparatus of the Arkansas Fertilizer Company’s plant, near the burned establishm­ent, was turned on the flames, but it could not bring them under control.

50 YEARS AGO Sept. 3, 1966

MARVELL — The boycott of Negro schools in the Marvell District will continue, a boycott leader said Friday. Also, other Negro leaders released letters sent to state officials complainin­g that parents of the boycotting students were being threatened with the loss of welfare funds. About 1,500 of the District’s 1,800 Negro students did not attend their first week of school, according to Mrs. Janie Adams, an official of the District 22 Action Committee.

25 YEARS AGO Sept. 3, 1991

BENTON — The federal government granted immunity from prosecutio­n to at least six admitted criminals, including three drug trafficker­s, during its investigat­ion of Saline County Prosecutin­g Attorney Dan Harmon, U.S. attorney’s office documents show. U.S. Attorney Chuck Banks publicly cleared Harmon of drug and corruption allegation­s on June 27, saying a three- yearlong federal investigat­ion found the allegation­s were “based on rumor and innuendo.”

10 YEARS AGO Sept. 3, 2006

DUMAS — A body suspected to be that of a 17-year-old Pine Bluff girl missing a week was found Saturday afternoon in a rural area east of Dumas, local and state authoritie­s said Saturday night. Casey Crowder, 17, of Pine Bluff disappeare­d Aug. 27 in Desha County while driving home from her boyfriend’s house. Her last communicat­ion was a call to her mother to say her car had run out of gas. The female body was taken to the state Crime Laboratory for identifica­tion, said Jim Snyder, Desha County deputy and sheriff-elect. The body was clothed, Snyder said, but he did not comment when asked if the body showed signs of trauma. When asked about the condition of the body, he shrugged and said, “It’s been six days.”
