Greenland knocks off West Fork 28-8

GREENLAND — Michael McAdoo rushed for 51 yards and two touchdowns to help Greenland beat the West Fork Tigers 28-8 on Friday night.

In a game that saw both teams fumble the ball eight times total, Greenland took advantage of West Fork’s early mistakes by converting on all three of the Tigers’ firsthalf turnovers. McAdoo led the Pirates in the first half rushing for 34 yards on 16 carries for two touchdowns.

“He’s a tough football player,” Greenland coach Lee Larkan said. “He’s just a hardnose player.”

McAdoo’s two first-half touchdowns came on a 3-yard-rush in the first quarter and a 1-yard-rush early in the second quarter. Wide receiver Chandler Alaniz also had a strong first half behind two scores of his own.

One touchdown came late in the first quarter and was a sweep play that the junior took 17 yards for a score. His second touchdown was a 19-yard pass from quarterback Austin Anderson.

Alaniz and McAdoo put the Pirates up 28-0 heading into halftime.

“We did not execute in the first half,” West Fork coach Brad Lindley said.

“Credit to them, they did. We gave them the short field a few times and they capitalized on it. We had a couple of drop balls that led to points for them and two of those balls could have been touchdowns.”

Greenland would not score in the second half and had ball security issues of its own. The Pirates fumbled three times but only lost one ball in the fourth quarter.

West Fork played better in the second half and scored at the beginning of the fourth quarter off a 25-yard pass from Graham Langston to Trey Grubbs. The Tigers converted the 2-point conversion to close the gap to 28-8.

“We got a good half we just have to get to where we can play four quarters,” Lindley said.

Greenland earned a measure of revenge after losing to the Tigers 18-13 in 2015.

“It was a game of turnovers,” Larkan said.

“The second half we didn’t play too good on offense but our defense kept us in it the whole game. They’ve owned us for a while so it’s good to be on the other side of that.”

Greenland will play Mansfield next week at home.

West Fork will host Elkins.
