Hendrix wins with Winn leading way

-

Austin College spoiled Hendrix’s season-opener last season, but not this year.

Hendrix, with 21 returning starters, scored touchdowns on four of its first five drives and seven players had a hand in touchdowns during a 55-23 rout of Austin on Saturday at Young Wise Stadium in Conway.

Dayton Winn rushed for three touchdowns while Mason Millsap added two rushing touchdowns. Seth Peters threw for two touchdowns and Miles Thompson added another passing touchdown and three different receivers caught scores for the Warriors (1-0), who gained 627 yards of offense.

Austin (0-1) gained 394 yards but was held to 90 in the first half as Hendrix took a 27-7 halftime lead.

Winn, a senior who led NCAA Division III in all-purpose yards last year, rushed for 110 yards and scored on runs of 30, 10 and 1 yards, all coming in the fist half.

Peters, a senior, completed 22 of 24 passes for 269 yards. He completed a 40-yard touchdown pass to Spencer Smith in the first quarter and a 34-yard touchdown to Taylor Tibbs in the third quarter.

Thompson, a freshman, completed 5 of 10 passes for 72 yards and a 22-yard touchdown pass to Dustin McNeely in the fourth quarter. Millsap rushed for a career-high 126 yards with touchdown runs of 2 and 28 yards in the second half.

Winn helped build Hendrix’s lead. His 30-yard run made it 7-0, his 10-yard run made it 21-7 and his 1-yard run made it 27-7 at halftime. Austin scored three times in the second half, but Hendrix answered every time, and Millsap’s 28-yard run and McNeely’s 22-yard touchdown reception sealed it.

NAIA LINDSEY WILSON 63, LYON 17

COLUMBIA, Ky. — Dwane Robinson’s 11-yard touchdown pass to Michael Bowles pulled Lyon College to within 21-17 in the third quarter Saturday. But Lindsey Wilson scored the game’s final five touchdowns to turn the game into a rout.

Robinson completed 11 of 19 passes for 109 yards and added 36 yards on the ground. Bowles ran for 75 yards on 17 carries. The Scots (0-2) were held to 235 yards of offense, but held the ball for 37 minutes, 41 seconds. That helped them get close in the third quarter, but after Robinson’s touchdown pass made it 21-17, Jalen Sublett scored on a 3-yard run on the next drive and Lindsey Wilson scored on its next two possessions.

Dylan Beasley passed for 363 yards and 1 touchdown for Lindsey Wilson (2-0), the No. 12 team in NCAA Division III. Lindsey Wilson had four receivers catch touchdown passes.
