Stars on screen

- By Andrew Warren

Glover goes home: Donald Glover’s entertainment career continues to expand. The former “Community” fan favorite is finally headlining his own show, and it’s no wonder he has the starring role: he also created the show.

“Atlanta” premieres Tuesday, Sept. 6, on FX, with Glover starring as a young music manager who is helping his cousin (Brian Tyree Henry, “Boardwalk Empire”) get his career up and running in Atlanta’s legendary music scene.

It’s a semi-autobiographical dramedy straight from Glover’s mind, with an array of talent backing him and Henry up. Zazie Beetz (“Applesauce,” 2015) and LaKeith Stanfield (“Straight Outta Compton,” 2015) round out the main cast.

It’s an idea that Glover would know a lot about. While these days he’s probably better known for his acting career, he’s also a talented musician and DJ who was raised in an Atlanta suburb. Under his stage name, Childish Gambino, his second album, “Because the Internet,” was nominated for two Grammys. It was these influences that inspired him to write “Atlanta’s” pilot.

Even writing the pilot wasn’t outside of the actor and rapper’s comfort zone. After all, he hasn’t always been an onscreen presence. His television career started in 2006 behind the scenes of NBC’s “30 Rock” as part of the writing team (with occasional on-screen cameos), and he helped the team take home three Writers Guild of America Awards for their work.

But it hasn’t been just small-screen laughs and on-stage raps for this multitalented man. His silver screen career is taking off, too, with major roles in Hollywood blockbusters “Magic Mike XXL” (2015) and “The Martian” (2015) splashing his name across yet another entertainment realm.
