Texas State 56-54 beats Ohio in 3rd OT

ATHENS, Ohio (AP) — Ishmael Davis sacked Ohio quarterbac­k Greg Windham on a two-point conversion attempt in the third overtime to give Texas State a 56-54 victory over Ohio on Saturday.

The teams had amassed 110 points before a defensive stop made the difference for Texas State which gave new coach Everett Withers his first win.

Windham had just hit Elijah Ball on an 18-yard scoring strike and Ohio was within two points of tying the game. Windham retrieved a low snap and looked up to see Davis in his face.

Tyler Jones, who threw for 418 yards and four touchdowns for Texas State, caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from halfback L.G. Williams to start the third overtime and then slipped a shovel pass to Gabe Schrade for two points and the win.

Texas State’s Marcus Ripley kicked his first collegiate field goal from the 27 as the clock clicked to zero to send the game into overtime. … Central Michigan 49, Presbyteri­an 3: Jahray Hayes ran for three touchdowns and Central Michigan rolled over Presbyteri­an 49-3 in the season opener for both teams on Thursday night.

On the second play from scrimmage, Devon Spalding broke off a 69-yard touchdown run and the rout was on. Spalding finished with 135 yards rushing on just 15 carries.

In the second quarter, Presbyteri­an punted from its own 7-yard line. A 26-yard return by Emmett Thomas set up a short field, and seven plays later Hayes punched it in from the 2 for a 14-0 lead.

Hayes added a 12-yard touchdown run and Cooper Rush hooked up with Corey Willis for a 46-yard scoring toss in the third quarter. In the fourth, Hayes scored his third TD on an 8-yard carry and Amari Coleman returned an intercepti­on 27 yards for a score. Jonathan Ward added a 45-yard touchdown run.

Presbyteri­an managed just 126 total yards and six first downs, while CMU amassed 492 yards — including 255 on the ground. … Eastern Michigan 61, Mississipp­i Valley State 14:

Todd Porter threw for 171 yards and three touchdowns to lead Eastern Michigan to a 61-14 win over Mississipp­i Valley State in the season opener for both teams Friday night.

Shaq Vann ran for 156 yards on 20 carries, including a pair of touchdowns, Ian Eriksen also ran in two touchdowns and Blake Banham had one. Hauling in Porter’s TD passes were Nigel Kilby, Antoine Porter and Lavonte Robinson as Eastern Michigan piled up 479 total yards while holding Mississipp­i Valley State to 169. Paul Fricano had a 35-yard field goal.

Eastern Michigan took a 28-0 advantage into the break, then scored on every possession in the second half, including a safety that marked the team’s first since the 2005 season.

Mississipp­i Valley State avoided a shutout with a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including a 13-yard TD strike from Austin Bray to Joshua Banks. …

Albany 22, Buffalo 16: Neven Sussman teamed with Brad Harris for a 35-yard touchdown pass and two-point conversion as Albany rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat Buffalo 22-16 on Friday night in the season opener for both teams.

The scoring pass to a wide-open Harris capped an 81-yard drive to put the Great Danes ahead for good. Harris twisted to catch the conversion pass, and Albany iced the win when Kyle Sakowski intercepte­d a Buffalo pass with 2:38 left in the game.

Sussman completed 14 of 21 passes for 113 yards with a pair of TDs. Sophomore Elijah Ibitokun Hanks rushed for 104 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries, providing the bulk of Albany’s 125 yards on the ground.

Tyree Jackson brought Buffalo to within 14-13 with a 17-yard TD pass just before halftime, and the Bulls grabbed a 16-14 lead on a 45-yard field goal in the third quarter. Jackson fumbled at the goal line with 4:01 remaining. … Akron 47, Virginia Military 24: Thomas Woodson threw for a career-high six touchdown passes including two in the fourth quarter as Akron pulled away from VMI for a 47-24 victory on Saturday.

Woodson completed 23 of 32 passes for 407 yards, another career high for the junior, with three going to JoJo Natson, two to Jerome Lane and another to Austin Wolf. Lane caught 10 passes for 196 yards, both career highs.

Ryan Swingle’s second touchdown pass to Al Cobb got VMI within 26-24 in the final seconds of the third quarter before Woodson responded with scoring throws of 34 yards to Wolf and 19 to Natson. Warren Ball added a 5-yard scoring run.

VMI’s Quan Myers scored from a yard out to go up 7-0 but the lead wouldn’t last through the first quarter with Woodson throwing for three scores in giving the Zips a 19-10 halftime lead.

Cobb went 25 of 32 for 258 yards and two touchdowns with Myers making eight catches for 123 yards.
