Charles to visit Broncos

-

Jamaal Charles is scheduled to visit with the Denver Broncos today. If his surgically repaired right knee checks out, one of the Kansas City Chiefs’ best backs ever history could be joining their fierce divisional rival. Charles ran for 7,260 yards and 43 touchdowns in nine seasons with the Chiefs, finishing as the franchise’s career rushing leader. He also had 20 touchdown catches. But a career that looked as if it would land Charles, 30, in the Hall of Fame was derailed the past few years by injuries that cut short several seasons in his prime. He tore his left ACL while taking an awkward step out of bounds in Detroit in 2011. He tore his right ACL against Chicago four years later. After missing the start of last season, Charles returned to play in only three games, carrying 12 times for 40 yards, before requiring more operations on his knees. The Chiefs cut the fourtime Pro Bowl running back over the winter to clear more than $6 million in salary cap space so they could focus on solidifying their offensive line and keep the heart and soul of their defense — All-Pro safety Eric Berry.

Vikings extend Barr

The Minnesota Vikings have exer- cised the fifth-year option on linebacker Anthony Barr, but declined to do the same with injured quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. The Vikings announced Barr’s option on Monday. Barr was drafted ninth overall in 2014 and has started 42 games in three seasons. Bridgewater had cemented himself the team’s offensive leader before

suffering a horrific leg injury just before last season started. It is still not known when Bridgewater will be able to play again, if ever. If he spends all of next season on the physically unable to perform list, Bridgewater’s contract will roll over to 2018. If Bridgewater does come back to play next season, the Vikings would have to negotiate a new deal with him.

TENNIS Pliskova loses in Prague

Top-seeded Karolina Pliskova was eliminated from the Prague Open on Monday, losing to unseeded Camila Giorgi 7-6 (6), 6-2 in the first round. It was the first victory for the 90th-ranked Italian over the

world No. 3 in four matchups, and a blow to Czech chances in their home event. It was the earliest loss for Pliskova, the U.S. Open finalist, since June. Giorgi will next face Qiang Wang of China, who defeated Maria Sakkari of Greece 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. Also, wild card Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic beat Carina Witthoeft of Germany 6-7 (6), 7-5, 6-2, and Oceane Dodin of France advance by topping Annika Beck of Germany 7-5, 6-4.

colon cancer that’s spread to his liver. Andretti, 54, told WTHRTV of Indianapolis that doctors found the cancer in January and he has had surgery to remove part of his colon. Andretti has been receiving treatments at a hospital near his North Carolina home. The nephew of racing legend Mario Andretti said he expects to have liver surgery in June. He said he decided to go public to encourage people to undergo colon cancer screenings. John Andretti made the last of his 11 Indy 500 starts in 2011, with a best finish of fifth in 1991. He has two NASCAR and one IndyCar victories in his career, and was last a full-time driver during the 2009 NASCAR season.
