Interstate closings extended by weather

-

Weather delays require extending overnight Interstate 49 lane closings to hang steel beams for the U.S. 412 Northern Bypass, according to Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department officials.

Workers will close all lanes of I- 49 for multiple, 15- minute intervals between 10 p. m. and 6 a. m. through May 12, excluding weekend nights.

Lanes will be closed from Wagon Wheel Road, Exit 76, in Springdale to Arkansas 264, Exit 78, in Lowell. Traffic control will be handled by the Arkansas State Police.

This project constructs about 4 miles of the four-lane U. S. 412 Northern Bypass, which will extend from I-49 to Arkansas 112. The bypass project will provide a principal east-west route north of Springdale.

Also because of the weather, crews wil pave northbound and southbound I-49 lanes and remove barrier walls through May 13. The work was anticipated to be done today. The inside and outside lanes will alternately be closed from Wagon Wheel Road, Exit 76, to New Hope Road, Exit 83.

The overnight closings will continue through May 13, excluding Saturday night. Traffic will be controlled using signs and barrels.

■ Northbound I-49 lane closings will be between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.

■ Southbound I-49 lane closings will be between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

The project is part of AHTD’s Connecting Arkansas Program and includes widening five miles of I-49 to three lanes in each direction.
