GOLF Johnson 4 shots off

Dustin Johnson showed more game than rust Thursday at the Wells Fargo Championship, where he missed only two greens — and plenty of putts — for a 2-under 70 that left him four shots behind leader Francesco Molinari at blustery Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington, N.C. It was Johnson’s first time playing since he slipped and fell down the stairs at his rental house in Augusta, hurting his back and knocking him out of the Masters. On greens that were slightly softer and as pure as can be, Molinari ran off five birdies in a seven-hole stretch on the front nine and closed out his round with a 20-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th. That gave him a one-shot lead over Alex Noren of Sweden, J.B. Holmes, Grayson Murray and Brian Campbell. Phil Mickelson shot 71 in his first time out since the Masters. Ken Duke (Arkadelphia, Henderson State) shot a 68 and is tied for sixth. Bryce Molder (Conway) had a 3-over 75.

Jones: Change drug policy

Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones reiterated Thursday during an interview with Pro Football Talk that the Dallas Cowboys plan to the lobby the NFL to change the drug policy as it relates to marijuana. Owner Jerry Jones made a similar request to the NFL owners during a private meeting in March. The elder Jones even talked last week about suspended defensive end Randy Gregory’s chances of returning to the league hinging on a possibly change in the drug policy. Stephen Jones doubled down, saying it’s time for the NFL to review its outdated approach to marijuana in the best interest of the players and the league. He said that views regarding marijuana across the country, considering changes in its legal medicinal and recreational use in several states, should be part of the league’s consideration.

HOCKEY Crosby back on ice

Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby is skating again, but Coach Mike Sullivan provided no update on when his star will be ready to return from a concussion. Crosby sat out Pittsburgh’s 3-2 victory in Game 4 of its NHL Eastern Conference semifinal against Washington on Wednesday night. He was diagnosed with his second concussion of the season after taking a cross-check in the head from Capitals defenseman Matt Niskanen. The Penguins were given a day off Thursday, but several players including Crosby gathered at the team’s practice facility for a workout. Sullivan said Crosby “is in the process of rehabbing” but declined to answer when asked if there’s a chance the two-time MVP will play in Washington on Saturday. The Penguins are 5-4 in the playoffs with Crosby out of the lineup during his career.
