UA piles up NCAA entries

FAYETTEVIL­LE — The Arkansas Razorbacks men’s and women’s track and field teams have a combined 59 entries in 27 events for the NCAA Outdoor Championsh­ips.

The University of Arkansas, Fayettevil­le men’s team has 35 entries in 15 events, including Derek Jacobus and Gabe Moore, who already have qualified in the decathlon for the final round held in Eugene, Ore., June 7-10.

Arkansas’ other 33 men’s entries will compete in the NCAA West Preliminar­y meet held in Austin, Texas, May 25-27.

Arkansas women’s team has 24 entries in 12 events — including Tayliah Brooks, Payton Stumbaugh, Leigha Brown and Kesley Herman, who already have qualified in the heptathlon final round — and also will compete at the West Preliminar­y meet.

The top 12 finishers of 48 entrants in each event in Austin will advance to Eugene.

Arkansas men sign five

FAYETTEVIL­LE — Hunter Woodhall, who has the nation’s fourth-fastest high school time in the 400 meters and is a double-amputee who runs on carbon-fiber prosthetic legs, is among five track and field signees for the Arkansas Razorbacks it was announced Friday.

Woodhall, from Syracuse, Utah, has run a personal-best of 46.56 seconds in the 400, which is a Utah state record.

Other signees for the Razorbacks are Loquan Nairn from South Plains (Texas) Community College, the junior college indoor national champion in the long jump (25-8 1/4 ) and triple jump (51-4 1/4); high jumper Jah-Nhai Perinchief from Iowa Central Community College; Britt Sease, from Springdale and The American School in Tokyo, who has bests of 47.55 in the 400 and 1:53.66 in the 800; and Keitavious Walter, from Hinds (Miss.) Community College, who has bests of 10.21 in the 100 and 20.43 in the 200.

Gorlei shoots 84 in first round

University of Arkansas, Fayettevil­le sophomore Cara Gorlei shot a 12-over 84 on Friday in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Championsh­ip at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.

Playing as one of 12 individual­s, Gorlei is 12 strokes behind the leaders as only two golfers in the 132-player field were able to at least shoot even par.

Northweste­rn leads the team competitio­n after a 13-over 301. Kent State is second at 303. South Carolina is seventh at 313 for the lowest round by an SEC school. Florida is 16th (320) and Alabama is 21st (328).

Henderson State, Arkansas Tech slip

Henderson State University and Arkansas Tech University each fell back a place Friday at the NCAA Women’s Division II championsh­ip at Findlay Country Club in Findlay, Ohio.

The Lady Reddies shot a 40-over 328 to move into sixth place, 36 shots behind the leader, Barry University, heading into today’s final round.

Luisa Gartmann led the Lady Reddies with a 5-over 77 on Friday. Teammate Sarah Wright sits in a tie for 15th in the medal competitio­n. She is at 17 over, nine shots behind the leader, Ann Parmerter of Dallas Baptist.

Arkansas Tech shot a 33-over 321 in the third round and sits in a tie for eighth place in the 12-team field at 98 over.

Caroline Fredensbor­g fired a 7-over 79 for the Golden Suns and is in a six-way tie for 34th place which includes teammate Pia Nunbhakdi.
