■ Chris Hooper, a police lieutenant in Corpus Christi, Texas, said officers freed a contractor who slipped notes to bank customers through the receipt slot pleading for help after he accidental­ly locked himself inside a room that led to the back of an ATM.

■ Jimmy Carter, 92, the former president, was treated at a hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba, as a precaution Thursday after becoming dehydrated as he and his wife, Rosalynn, worked in the hot sun to help build houses at a Habitat for Humanity project. ■ Kathi Babbit, a union shop steward in Kalamazoo, Mich., confirmed that a grievance over subcontrac­ting was filed after Western Michigan University hired a team of goats to clear underbrush from 15 acres of campus woodland without telling the union.

■ Revantae Williams, 24, who escaped from an inmate re-entry program in Ocala, Fla., knocked on the door of a 63-year-old grandmothe­r and asked to use the telephone but ended up surrenderi­ng to police when the woman persuaded him to give up. ■ Bob Martin, a beekeeper, told sheriff’s deputies that it’s likely that the thief who made off with seven hives containing 400,000 bees from an apiary in Foyil, Okla., got stung “quite a bit” during the heist since a blanket used to cover the hives was left behind.

■ Jonathan Jordan, 18, of Montgomery, Ala., faces an attempted-arson charge after investigat­ors said he used a lighter to ignite a decorative window covering as he argued with his mother, endangerin­g her life as well those of two younger siblings in the house.

■ Carmen Courchesne, 74, who is in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease and uses a wheelchair, arrived home a day late after missing her flight from Boston to Fort Myers, Fla., when a Jet-Blue employee escorting Courchesne through the terminal left her alone at the wrong gate, family members said.

■ Francisco Hernandez, 39, tried to hide when police in Ventura, Calif., arrived at his home to arrest him in a June 30 bank robbery but was quickly discovered by a police dog that found him inside a modified couch.
