■ Joseph Lovergive of Greeneville, Tenn., explained that his family loves to decorate early for Halloween after sheriff’s deputies used a social media post to ask people to stop calling 911 to report a “body” trapped under a closed, bloodstained garage door at Lovergive’s house. ■ Melania Trump, a former model who’s now first lady, wore sneakers and a red plaid shirt to promote healthy eating by planting, harvesting and washing vegetables with a group of children in the White House kitchen garden made famous by her predecessor, Michelle Obama.
■ James Comey, the FBI director fired by President Donald Trump, carried on with a keynote speech at Washington’s Howard University and encouraged students to listen to opposing views, even as he was interrupted repeatedly by protesters chanting “No justice, no peace,” an apparent reference to his past comments about police and crime in black communities.
■ Lukas Cavar, 19, an Indiana University freshman, said he felt lucky to be alive after members of his university caving club mistakenly locked him inside a gated cave where he spent 60 hours before two club leaders, hearing that he was missing, returned and freed him.
■ Itir Esen, 18, was stripped of the Miss Turkey 2017 title over a social media post she made that pageant officials said insulted the memory of 250 people killed while opposing the country’s failed 2016 military coup.
■ Brian McGregor, a police lieutenant in Kenner, La., said a dump truck rolled over a portable toilet at a construction site, sending a worker who was inside to the hospital with fractures and a collapsed lung.
