Miami breaks drought against FSU

-

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Malik Rosier threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Darrell Langham with six seconds remaining and No. 13 Miami beat Florida State 24-20 on Saturday to end a seven-game losing streak in the series.

“It was a long time coming for our players, coaches and especially the fans,” Miami Coach Mark Richt said. “It doesn’t matter how you win a game like this, especially in this series.”

Rosier, who came into the game leading the Atlantic Coast Conference in passing efficiency, had a rough start as he completed only four of his first 16 passes. The junior found a rhythm in the second half and finished 19 of 44 for 254 yards and three touchdowns.

After Florida State (1-3, 1-2 ACC) took a 20-17 lead with 1:24 remaining on James Blackman’ 20-yard pass to Auden Tate, Rosier drove Miami (4-0, 2-0) 75 yards in nine plays and 1:18. The junior found Langham in single coverage up the right sideline and he beat Tarvarus McFadden.

“The last play was simply a four verticals play. We work on it every week,” Rosier said. “Darrell made a great play.”

Down 3-0 at halftime, Miami scored 10 consecutive points in the third quarter to take the lead. Michael Badgley’s 31-yard field goal on the opening drive of the second half tied it, and Rosier connected with Berrios for a 21yard touchdown. Berrios gave Miami great field position with a 44-yard punt return to the 21 after the Seminoles had only 10 players on the field.

Florida State tied it at 1010 early in the fourth quarter when Ryan Izzo caught a 15yard pass in the back of the end zone. Ricky Aguayo gave Florida State the lead with a 38-yard field goal, but Miami took a 17-13 advantage on Rosier’s 7-yard pass to Braxton Berrios.

Blackman, who was 8 of 18 for 61 yards and two interceptions in the first three quarters, was 9 of 10 for 142 yards over the final 15 minutes. Cam Akers had his first 100-yard rushing game with 129 yards on 14 carries.

Florida State is 1-3 for the first time since 1976, which was Bobby Bowden’s first season, and has dropped consecutive home games for the first time since 2009. It also is the first time since 1974 that the Seminoles have dropped their first two home games of a season.

“It came down to the end they made one more play, got the one inch they needed to get the touchdown and do the things which they needed to do. … It was a classic game, a great game,” Florida State Coach Jimbo Fisher said. “They made one more play. We’ve got to find a way to do that.”

NO. 2 CLEMSON 28, WAKE FOREST 14

CLEMSON, S.C. — Kelly Bryant threw for 200 yards and a touchdown before leaving with an ankle injury and Clemson beat Wake Forest to reach 6-0 for a third consecutive season.

There was no immediate word on the severity of Bryant’s injury. He left in the third quarter after Travis Etienne’s 1-yard touchdown run put Clemson ahead 21-0. Trainers looked at Bryant’s ankle and took him into the sideline medical tent. Bryant tested his legs with a few short jogs once he came out and remained on the sidelines with teammates.

Bryant did not re-enter the game as Clemson (6-0, 4-0) beat the Demon Deacons (4-2, 1-2) for a ninth consecutive time.

Bryant’s 28-yard scoring pass to Deon Cain got the Tigers started. Etienne, a freshman, had 67 yards rushing along with his touchdown. Adam Choice added a rushing score and Cannon Smith added a 13-yard touchdown catch from thirdstring passer Hunter Johnson.

PACIFIC-12 NO. 14 SOUTHERN CAL 38, OREGON STATE 10

LOS ANGELES — Sam Darnold threw for 316 yards and three touchdowns, Ronald Jones II rushed for a touchdown and No. 14 Southern California (5-1, 3-1) defeated Oregon State (1-5, 0-3) on Saturday.

Wide receiver Tyler Vaughns and tight end Josh Falo each caught their first career touchdown reception from Darnold as the Trojans were workmanlike in bouncing back from last week’s 30-27 loss at No. 11 Washington State. Jones had 79 yards rushing and two receptions for 17 yards.

INDEPENDENT NO. 21 NOTRE DAME 33, NORTH CAROLINA 10

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Josh Adams ran for 118 yards, including a 73-yard touchdown dash for Notre Dame.

Deon McIntosh added 124 yards rushing and two scores for the Fighting Irish (5-1). They played without starting quarterback Brandon Wimbush due to a right foot injury.

Ian Book threw for a score and had two interceptions. Notre Dame had 487 yards, 341 coming on the ground.

Chazz Surratt threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Ratliff-Williams before halftime in the only noteworthy offensive play for the Tar Heels (1-5).
