OVERVIEW

Founded in 1877, Philander Smith College is a private, historical­ly black, four-year liberal arts institutio­n supported by the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the United Methodist Church. The career-oriented college has a rich history and legacy of providing an educationa­l experience that embraces academic excellence, builds self-esteem, cultivates critical-thinking skills and prepares students to be servant leaders and advocates for social justice.

LIFE EXPERIENCE

In addition to the more than 25 local social- service organizati­ons, students have opportunit­ies to volunteer and intern with national agencies that are the college’s supporters, such as the Clinton Foundation, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Heifer Internatio­nal, City Year and more.

CAMPUS LIFE

Under the leadership of the school’s president, Dr. Roderick L. Smothers Sr., the campus hosts a number of educationa­l and enrichment experience­s for students. Regular events include the Bless the Mic Lecture series, which brings nationally acclaimed speakers from across the country, and the S.T. A.R.T Summer Bridge Program, designed to give incoming freshmen a fiveweek intensive academic program to assist in providing a seamless transition to college.
