‘Hands of Compassion’ luncheon lends hands to kids’ camp
LifeSource International leaders will host the “Hands of Compassion” luncheon April 12 at Mermaids Seafood Restaurant in Fayetteville. The luncheon will benefit the nonprofit organization’s “Kids Life” summer day camp.
The eight-week program that begins in June serves approximately 100 second- through 12th-graders. The camp is planned for children from low-income families who “may otherwise be at risk” during the summer months if their parents can’t afford child care, said Amberly Gassman, outreach coordinator.
Gassman said the program costs the licensed child care facility about $100,000. Costs include providing quality teachers, two to three field trips each week, two meals and two snacks everyday and background checks for employees and volunteers. The teachers offer “education mixed with play.” Organizers are hopeful money raised at the April 12 benefit luncheon will help defray most — if not all — camp costs.
Each week of camp will follow a theme, beginning with child safety. Campers will learn about topics to include cyber bullying,
safe relationships and listen to speakers that include law enforcement officers. Other themes will include leadership and healthy self-esteem, health and nutrition, career path tools, theater and music appreciation.
The campers also will receive reading and math instruction, create arts and crafts and participate in character-building activities.
Admission for the luncheon is free, but reservations are required. For more information, call (479) 521-4000 or go to lifesourceinternational.org.
