GOLF Ex-Hog in British Open

Former Arkansas Razorback Andrew Landry will play in the British Open for the first time next week at Carnoustie after replacing Bernd Wiesberger in the field. Tournament organizers made the announcement Wednesday, with Wiesberger saying on social media that he was having problems with an ongoing wrist injury. The Austrian, who hasn’t played competitively since April, said “the healing process has not put me into a position where I can train, let alone play, at the level I would like to.” Landry, 30, won his first PGA Tour title in April, at the Valero Texas Open. Fellow American Keegan Bradley is now first reserve for the British Open, which starts July 19, followed by Adrian Otaegui and Aaron Wise. Austin Cook (Jonesboro, Razorbacks) earned his spot into the Open after a fifth-place tie at last week’s Greenbrier Classic at White Sulphur Springs, W. Va.

FOOTBALL Supplemental draftees

The New York Giants have spent a 2019 third-round draft pick on Western Michigan cornerback Sam Beal, and Washington has selected Virginia Tech cornerback Adonis Alexander in the supplemental draft on Wednesday. New York will surrender its third-round pick in next April’s draft in Nashville, while the Redskins gave up a sixth-round pick. Both players were ruled academically ineligible for the upcoming college football season and entered the supplemental draft. Not selected were Mississippi State safety Brandon Bryant, Grand Valley State running back Martayveus Carter and Oregon State linebacker Bright Ugwoegbu. Beal’s strength is in man coverage, featuring agility and good hands; some scouts projected him as a higher prospect than a third-rounder in the next draft. The Giants need depth in their secondary. Alexander has good size at

6-foot-3, 196 pounds and is physical. He does his best work against passes in front of him and isn’t shy about defending the run.

‘Pacman’ assaulted

NFL veteran Adam “Pacman” Jones was assaulted by an airport worker at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, police said. The airport worker, identified as Frank Ragin, made a gesture toward Jones about 10 p.m. Tuesday, Atlanta police said. Jones confronted the man about what he meant by the gesture and the two began to argue, according to police. The argument occurred on concourse B near Gate B6, police said. Ragin

allegedly punched Jones, injuring his face. He also allegedly struck Jones’ companion, who has not been identified, injuring her hand. Police said Jones, 34, then pushed Ragin to the ground. Police eventually determined Ragin was the primary aggressor. Ragin, who was charged with two counts of battery, was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital to be treated for his injuries. Jones and his companion declined medical treatment. Jones, who was drafted in 2005 out of West Virginia by the Tennessee Titans, has also played for the Dallas Cowboys and Cincinnati Bengals. The cornerback played in nine games for the Bengals last season.

BASEBALL Segura, Aguilar voted in

Seattle Mariners shortstop Jean Segura and Jesus Aguilar won the MLB Final Vote, placing them in Tuesday’s 2018 Major League Baseball All-Star Game. Segura, a former Arkansas Traveler, tallied the most fan votes of the five American League finalists, beating out former Arkansas Razorback Andrew Benintendi of the Red Sox, Giancarlo Stanton of the Yankees, Eddie Rosario of the Twins and Andrelton Simmons of the Angels. Aguilar edged out Brandon Belt of the Giants, Max Muncy of the Dodgers, Matt Carpenter of the Cardinals, and Trea Turner of the Nationals for the last National League spot in the voting.

Lester unlikely to pitch

The Chicago Cubs adjusted their rotation for this weekend’s series against the Padres, making it unlikely that ace Jon Lester will pitch in the All-Star Game. The Cubs, mindful that they have only three days off for the All-Star break, moved up Kyle Hendricks’ turn from Sunday to Saturday night, pushing Lester to Sunday. Lester could still make himself available to pitch an inning in the All-Star Game, but it now seems doubtful that he will pitch at all. Hendricks likely will open the second half against the Cardinals on July 19 at Wrigley Field, though Manager Joe Maddon said the Cubs continue to assess their options.

Giles sent to Class AAA

The Houston Astros have optioned reliever Ken Giles to Class AAA Fresno, a night after he appeared to curse Manager A. J. Hinch when he lifted him from the game. The Astros were up by four to start the ninth inning against Oakland on Tuesday night when Giles took over and gave up three consecutive singles which cut the lead to 4-1. Hinch came to the mound to take out Giles and the television broadcast caught him appearing to curse at Hinch right after he walked by him on his way off the field. It was the second major outburst of the year for the righthander, who punched himself in the face as he left the mound after another bad performance earlier in the season. Houston went on to win Tuesday’s game 6-5 in 11 innings.
