Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

Prefer print edition

-

Saturday, we received a letter from the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette informing us that after Feb. 10 we would no longer be able to receive a print edition of the paper except on Sundays. We were offered a “free” iPad to use to access the paper MondaySaturday. Well, we already have an iPad, so that was not something we want to accept.

I called to ask if there was a lower rate for customers that did not require a “free” iPad. The gentleman was very nice, but could not answer my question. He offered to have someone call me Monday to discuss my concerns. While speaking with him I came to understand that basically most of the state except Northwest Arkansas and Little Rock apparently will have to deal with digital news.

If the Democrat-Gazette is going to make the majority of the state be digital, why would other parts of the state be treated differently? I’m concerned about people like my mother, who is unable to use an iPad to read the news. She has been reading a newspaper daily for over 80 years. This is going to be hard on our senior citizens that have been loyal customers for their entire lives.

I guess my point is, digital for all or digital for none. That is only fair. I certainly do not want to pay the same price for a digital paper as a real paper. Think of all the money you’re saving going digital. All those carriers that depend on their routes to make ends meet will no longer be able to provide some much-needed things for their families. l know life changes, but when it affects people trying to make ends meet and the elderly, it is wrong.
