‘Stand your ground’ bill waste of time for state

-

For all the talk about limited government and personal freedoms espoused by lawmakers, you’d think there wouldn’t be so much time spent on legislation that’s either counterproductive or tries to solve problems that don’t exist.

Take House Bill 1059, Arkansas’ “stand your ground” proposal to allow civilians to act as law enforcement. Why are we debating a law that in other states hasn’t reduced crime and has led to more homicides? Government ought to be working on things that actually protect people and I want the personal freedom to be in public without somebody playing soldier of fortune every time there’s an argument over a parking space.

If someone comes into your home, by all means, defend what’s yours. If someone threatens your life outside your home and you can’t get away, guess what, its already completely lawful to use deadly force.

HB 1059 is a waste of time and it doesn’t make us any safer. Lawmakers should vote no. RYAN AGNEW
