Reminiscent of home

-

Reading the guest column Thursday morning by G. Russell Holt reminded me, indirectly, as I let my thoughts expand a bit, about Tommy Pruitt’s Store in my hometown of McRae, then population 428. Family owned, everything from a butcher counter to brooms, gas for the trucks and tractors to a wonderful glass case full of sugary candies and treats. Quantity limited, yes. But quality always pure.

I knew the man who ran the cash register, was probably related to him. Usually the store was full of people I knew as a young girl. I had walked to the store across the empty lot from my grandmother’s house by myself without ever a concern.

Mr. Holt speaks of privatization of government services as a solution toward higher-quality services at lower costs. Funny how that thought circled around. (I’m with you, Mr. Holt.) GWEN FULLEN
