About moral failings

-

Re Chris Buskirk’s “Christians who support Trump/Why some think they’re sinful”: Mr. Buskirk, you say we are not to hold leaders to Christian tenets (or those of other religions perhaps?) when that would interfere with political expediency. As long as a potential leader says he or she will do what we want, then we should set aside our knowledge of their moral failings and vote for them. Have I summarized your position correctly?

If we know that a candidate is an habitual liar, shall we assume we are hearing the truth?

If we know that a candidate is a betrayer of trust, shall we assume we will not be betrayed?

If a candidate condemns and speaks hatefully of other members of the citizenry, shall we assume we are forever immune from condemnation and hatred because we share the same feelings?

If a candidate says to assault those who do not support him or her, shall we assault and even kill them?

We don’t have to judge by religious tenets, but common sense and societal norms can guide us. If you vote solely on what a candidate promises, good luck. SUSAN SNELL Farmington
