GOLF Kaymer leads by 2

Martin Kaymer didn’t look the part of someone who hasn’t won in five years. He was bogey-free Saturday in the PGA Tour’s Memorial Tournament at Dublin, Ohio, for a 6-under 66 that gave him a two-shot lead over Adam Scott going into the final round. Scott also had a 66, finishing with a shot into 3 feet on the 18th hole at Muirfield Village. They will be in the final group, two major champions who each reached No. 1 in the world are in the midst of a drought. Scott has gone more than three years since his last victory. It might not be a two-man race. Hideki Matsuyama shot 64 and was in the group four shots behind that included Jordan Spieth (69) and Patrick Cantlay. All three of them last won in 2017.

Parel out front

Scott Parel shot a 6-under 66 on Saturday to extend his lead to five strokes in the PGA Tour Champions’ Principal Charity Classic at Des Moines, Iowa. Parel had a 15-under 129 total at Wakonda Club to break the tournament 36-hole record of 13 under set a year ago by eventual winner Tom Lehman. Parel, 54, won twice last year on the 50-and-older tour. Marco Dawson shot a 65 to match Jerry Kelly (67) at 10 under. Gene Sauers (68), David Toms (68) and Billy Andrade (69) were 9 under.

Cole Custer slipped past Tyler Reddick in the final turn and held in to win the Xfinity Series race in

overtime Saturday at Pocono Raceway. Custer won his third race of the season in the No. 00 Ford for Stewart-Haas Racing. Reddick used a sweeping move on the inside and pulled away off the restart in the overtime and had the checkered flag in sight. Reddick drifted up the track headed into the frontstretch and Custer caught him and held on to nip him at the finish line for the thrilling victory. Chase Briscoe finished third to cap a successful day for SHR. Ryan Preece was fourth and Christopher Bell fifth. The race was forced into OT when Justin Allgaier spun off a restart with three laps left. Reddick leads the Xfinity standings by 76 points over Bell.

TRACK AND FIELD Downtown L.A. featured

For the first time since 2013, a triathlon will include downtown Los Angeles as part of its course. Today’s Herbalife 24 Triathlon will begin in Venice Beach and finish at L.A. Live near the Staples Center. The course is a similar version to the one used for the L.A. Triathlon, but the last one was contested in 2013. The Olympic distance triathlon begins with a 1,500-meter swim in the Pacific Ocean, a 40-kilometer (25-mile) bike ride into Los Angeles and a 10K run (6.2 miles) in downtown. The course will not be the one that will be used for the 2028 Olympics. Organizers have already determined that Long Beach will host the triathlon during the games. Race director Brennan Lindner said the course for Sunday’s race does offer a few challenges, starting with the swim, where the temperature in the Pacific Ocean could be in the low 50s. The bike course is fast because there aren’t a lot of hills, but the run does have a couple climbs to test competitors toward the end.
