Who was the punctuatio­n guru that decided the exclamatio­n point has become pointless? That whatever the writer meant to emphasize ought to be obvious to the reader, hence there is no need to add anything by way of punctuatio­n. Maybe so.

But how far are we willing to go with this Please note there is no question mark after the preceding sentence nor any parenthese­s around this explanator­y note.

Can we assume that everyone should be able to recognize that a question is being asked whether or not an interrogat­ion point is placed at the end of the sentence? Again, maybe so. But as one who has been using various keyboards for more than 65 years, my personal thought on this might be expressed this way: @#$%& and finally, !!!! LEE WADDELL Clinton
