A message of peace

-

Over the Memorial Day weekend we heard a lot about honoring our brave soldiers who gave their lives to protect our freedom.

We saw the thousands of American flags being placed at the tombstones of the unlucky ones at Arlington Cemetery.

We sang a lot of songs and ate a lot of barbecue. We also read about the number of young veterans suffering horribly from wounds incurred on the battlefield, including PTSD, with many even resorting to suicide.

We owe the veterans and their families more than flags and barbecues. What if we shared in and mourned each family’s grief?

What if we cared enough to stop the upheaval and the loss to the world that war brings to millions of families here and abroad?

What if we prepared our future young men and women to deliver a message of peace overseas as farmers and teachers instead of soldiers?

Can we imagine a world without war? It’s time we try. Ending war might even be a giant step in stopping the ravages of global climate change. JEAN GORDON
