Misuse of scripture

-

Regarding Chris Buskirk’s article, “Christians who support Trump”: I am aghast at the false premises, the tertiary arguments and, especially, by the misuse of scripture by this man.

The article takes us on a long-winded and circuitous path designed to show that an article is shallow and benighted (Mr. and Mrs. French). The Frenches’ position appears to be: Provided one is a Christian, she/he should not be supportive of our current POTUS because his actions are arrogant, selfish, of the flesh and lack human compassion. Our author then cites everyone from Calvin, Joseph, David to Esther as examples of “sinful people” who were Hebrew and/ or church leaders and have been followed by people of faith.

The author strives to make a case that “the secular” and “the spiritual” are separate, and political leadership should only be graded based upon the competence of the leader. Our author does not address gross incompetence (heh). But is not the separation of “the world” and “the spirit” the crux of the problems of this world?

But what sticks in my craw is the misuse of scripture. To wit: Mrs. French quoted from the Book of Isaiah: “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; and substitute darkness for light.” Our author skews this to read that she means sexual sins. He then compounds his error to impute that the “context” of this chapter is about—get this—unmerited grace. Bunk! The chapter has to do with God declaring: My people have rejected the law and despised my word, and I am going to lay them waste and send them into exile.
