CUBS 1, GIANTS 0

CHICAGO — Cubs manager Joe Maddon says Wrigley Field plays like two different ballparks depending on the elements.

His team is finding success in both versions.

Kyle Hendricks pitched seven sharp innings and Chicago won despite getting only two hits, edging the San Francisco Giants 1-0 Thursday for its fifth straight victory.

Anthony Rizzo hit an RBI single to help the NL Central leaders complete a three-game sweep. The Giants lost their fourth in a row.

BRAVES 3, MARLINS 2

ATLANTA — Ronald Acuna Jr. hit an RBI single with two outs in the ninth inning and the Atlanta Braves won their fifth straight game, finishing off the Miami Marlins.

Freddie Freeman hit a tying ho- mer in the eighth and the Braves sent Miami to its 12th road loss in a row, the longest streak in the majors this year.

NATIONALS 7, PIRATES 1

PITTSBURGH — Max Scherzer pitched four innings in his return from the injured list, giving up one run as the Washington Nationals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-1 on Thursday night.

Scherzer allowed four hits, struck out three and walked one. The three-time Cy Young Award winner was put on the IL on July 26 with a strain in his upper back — a day earlier, he made his first start since being on the injured list with a back issue.

The Nationals hadn’t set a pitch count for Scherzer in this game, but said they would closely monitor him. He threw 71 pitches, 48 for strikes.

AMERICAN LEAGUE RED SOX 5, ROYALS 4, 10 INNINGS

BOSTON — Brock Holt helped the Red Sox make quick work of the Kansas City Royals in a victory that was two weeks in the making.

Holt hit an RBI single with one out in the 10th inning as Boston beat Kansas City to complete the weather-suspended game that began Aug. 7.

“We wanted to end it as quick as possible,” said Holt, who hopped on a flight to San Diego with his teammates after the game. “It was probably the best outcome we could have had today.”

WHITE SOX 6, RANGERS 1

CHICAGO — Yoan Moncada lined a two-run homer his return from the injured list, Ross Detwiler struck out a career-high eight and the Chicago White Sox beat the Texas Rangers.

James McCann hit a solo shot and doubled, and Jose Abreu, Tim Anderson and Matt Skole each had an RBI as Chicago won for the third time in four games.

ASTROS 6, TIGERS 3

HOUSTON — Gerrit Cole struck out 12 over seven scoreless innings, Alex Bregman homered and the Houston Astros beat the Detroit Tigers.

Cole (15-5) pitched two-hit ball and allowed one walk over 94 pitches. He’s 11-0 with a 1.84 ERA in his past 15 starts and has 238 strikeouts this season, one shy of teammate and league leader Justin Verlander.

Cole returned for his first start since Aug. 7 after dealing with right hamstring discomfort. He showed no signs of rust, retiring 16 of his final 17 batters.

After the Tigers stunned Houston in a 2-1 win Wednesday night despite Verlander’s complete-game two-hitter, the Astros gave Cole more than enough run support. Michael Brantley extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a fourth-inning double, and Bregman followed with a lined shot to the first row of the left field Crawford Boxes for his 31st homer.
