PREP SOFTBALL USA SOFTBALL SELECTS WEST’S WACASER
Bentonville West senior Hallie Wacaser was one of 15 players chosen by USA Softball to represent the country during the 2019 U-17 Women’s Pan American Softball Championship.
This tournament will be held Oct. 11-19 in Barranquilla, Columbia, as teams try to qualify for the 2020 U-18 Women’s World Softball Cup. Team USA is led by coach Kyla Holas of Pasadena, Texas, and assistant coaches Becky Snow of Albany, N.Y., and Ernie Yarbrough of Owasso, Okla.
Wacaser is a three-time all-state performer who has verbally committed to Florida State since her freshman season. She hit .481 last season with 6 doubles, 4 triples, 12 home runs and 41 RBI, and she scored 43 runs while helping the Lady Wolverines win the 6A-West Conference championship and reach the Class 6A state tournament semifinals.
PREP CROSS COUNTRY FAYETTEVILLE WINS SOUTHERN STAMPEDE
Fayetteville placed three boys in the top 10 Saturday and won the green division title during the Missouri Southern Stampede in Joplin, Mo.
The Bulldogs finished the meet with 57 points, while Bentonville High was a distant second with 149 points. Springdale Har-Ber took sixth place with 263, followed by Mountain Home at 17th and Bentonville West at 18th.
Carter Betts led Fayetteville as he covered the 5,000-meter course in 15 minutes, 38.57 seconds and finished fourth individually, while Jack Williams was less than a second behind and took fifth. Gabe Craig took seventh place with his time of 15:42.22. Bentonville’s Dylan Mayberry took 10th place with his time of 15:46.90, while Har-Ber’s Reuben Reina finished second in 15:13.81.
In the girls’ green division, Fayetteville took second with 121 points, while Bentonville was eighth at 307 and was Rogers ninth at 312.
Fayetteville’s Grace Litzinger had the best performance for area runners as her time of 18:52.34 was good enough for fifth place, while Rogers’ Ali Nachitgal was sixth at 18:57.23.
HERITAGE’S DOUGLAS WINS IN NLR
Rogers Heritage’s Lawson Douglas won the Arkansas National Guard race in North Little Rock on Saturday.
Douglas, who won in Siloam Springs a week ago, crossed in 16 minutes, 47.5 seconds edging Bryant’s Bresner Austin by one-tenth of a second. Heritage’s Kyle Saelzier finished fourth.
Siloam Springs had five of the top 10 finishers in the girls’ race in North Little Rock led by Quincy Efurd’s third-place finish. Rebekah Rodgers was five seconds behind Efurd and took fourth. Kadynce Frost was sixth, followed by Jaclyn Weilnau (8th) and Claudia Mercado (9th).
PREP VOLLEYBALL HAR-BER GOES 3-1 IN OKLAHOMA
Springdale Har-Ber picked up a pair of five-set wins, including one over previously undefeated Edmond (Okla.) North to finish 3-1 in the Jenks (Okla.) Invitational over the weekend.
The Lady Wildcats (13-4) won the final two sets to knock off Edmond North 3-2 (25-22, 22-25, 2426, 25-20, 15-12). Kyler Greenlee led with 18 kills and five blocks (two solos), while Natalie Williams added 14 kills and Kat Cooper 13 kills and six blocks.
Trinity Sharp finished with 30 digs, while Caylan Koons added 34 assists, 18 digs, seven kills, and four aces.
Har-ber also defeated Tulsa Bishop Kelley 3-0 and host Jenks 3-2, before losing to Edmond Santa Fe in five sets.
Cooper finished the weekend with 60 kills and hit .427 to go with 10 aces and 17 blocks. Sharp finished with more than 100 digs. Koons had 115 assists, 32 kills, and nine aces.
SOUTHSIDE, FAYETTEVILLE TIE FOR THIRD IN SPRINGFIELD
Fort Smith Southside and Fayetteville each lost in the semifinals of the Springfield (Mo.) Classic on Saturday.
The Lady Purple’Dogs (16-3) went 4-0 in pool play before losing to Nixa, Mo. Southside also went 4-0 and lost to Springfield Kickapoo.
Avery Fitzgerald led the Mavericks (13-5) with 40 kills, 24 aces and 25 digs on the day. Hannah Hogue contributed a team-high 80 assists and 36 digs. Kelsey Hamilton added a team-high 39 digs and eight aces.
Rosana Hicks and Amelia Whatley led Fayetteville with 34 kills each on the day. Gracyn Spresser contributed 49 digs and Kennedy Phelan 107 assists for Fayetteville.
BENTONVILLE FINISHES STRONG
Bentonville bounced back from a 1-2 finish Friday and won both of its Saturday matches at the Jenks (Okla.) Invitational.
The Lady Tigers (12-6) claimed an 18-25, 25-18, 25-12, 25-23 victory over Jenks, then knocked off Tulsa Bishop Kelley with a 25-14, 25-2328-26 decision. Bentonville suffered 3-0 losses Friday to Edmond North and Norman North then came away with a 3-0 win over Shawnee, Kan.
Senior Savanna Riney earned all-tournament honors as she compiled 52 kills over the five matches, as well as 59 digs. Other Lady Tigers who contributed were Trinity Hamilton (46 kills, 50 digs), Maddie Breed (35 kills, team-high 11 blocks, 25 digs), Ava Hoyord (37 kills, 21 digs) and Taylor Shapley (140 assists, 45 digs).
Bentonville returns to 6A-West action Tuesday with a home match against Springdale.
