Lent at Highlands Church, Bella Vista
The Season of Lent is the 40 days which comes before Easter in the Christian calendar.
Beginning on Ash Wednesday, Lent is a season of reflection and preparation before the celebration of Easter. By observing the 40 days of Lent, Christians replicate Jesus Christ’s sacrifice and withdrawal into the desert for 40 days.
Ash Wednesday Service, February 26, 6:00 pm
Highlands Church will begin the Season of Lent on Ash Wednesday, February 26, with a special worship service at 6:00 pm. On this first day of Lent, Pastor Robert Cloninger will apply ashes to the foreheads of those in attendance, which symbolize penance, mourning and mortality. Leaving the service wearing these ashes becomes a public expression of one’s faith and penance. This short service starts the Lenten journey culminating in the crucifixion and resurrection of our Savior Jesus Christ.
Bible Studies
During Lent, many Christians “give up” certain luxuries as a Lenten sacrifice. One example is to forgo one or two meals a week and give the equivalent in canned goods to your local food pantry. This year, we at Highlands Church are focusing on getting closer to God and repenting of sins
through Bible study and prayer. We have multiple small groups who meet weekly to study God’s Word. Everyone is welcome to join one of these small groups at any time. Call the church office at 479-855-2277 for more information and a schedule of meeting times.
Palm Sunday Worship, April 5, 9:30 am and 11:15 am (Saturday, April 4, 5:30 pm)
As we commemorate the last week of Jesus’ earthly life, we celebrate his triumphant entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, April 5. At Highlands’ 9:30 am. service, we begin with a Palm Parade led by the children. The celebratory music sung by the congregation and choir herald the arrival of Jesus, but gently foreshadow the events to come.
Maundy Thursday, April 9, 6:00 pm
This service honors the “Last Supper” of Jesus with a service of Holy Communion. The Chancel Choir will incorporate communion in their presentation of a new cantata by Joseph Martin entitled “The Colors of Grace.” This soulful presentation depicts the events leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus, beginning with the Upper Room. Members of our Drama Ministry will aid the beautiful music using the “Colors of Grace.”
Good Friday, April 10, 6:00 pm
The Stations of the Cross Service is a powerful way to contemplate the mystery of Jesus’ gift of Himself to us. Using scripture and historic Biblical art, this service involves our senses and our emotions as we experience the sacrifice of Jesus in a unique and beautiful way.
Easter Services, April 12, 9:30 am. Traditional and 11:15 am. Gathering Service
The Lord Is Risen! He Is Risen Indeed! Celebrate Easter Sunday with Highlands Church.
The season of Lent and Easter is both introspective and joyous. All are welcome to experience the reason why Christ went through this sacrifice, death and resurrection for all of us. Jesus paid for our sin on the cross and rose from the dead to ensure life eternal for all who believe.
