SPRINGDALE — Carl Victor Johnson Jr.,

89, went to his heavenly home Aug. 15 at Circle of Life Hospice in Springdale, Ark. Born on Sept. 28, 1930, in Ludington, Mich., he was the only child of Carl Victor Johnson, Sr. and Martha Jensen. A private family service will be held at Salem Lutheran Church.

He leaves behind his wife of nearly 63 years, Aletha (Lee); his children, Andrea and husband Eric of Springdale, Karen and husband Tim Fernandez of Claremore, Okla.; his grandchild­ren, Tim and Megan Fernandez, Kathryn and Blake McCullough-Davis, Joseph Fernandez, Katie and Tanner Helm; his great-grandsons, Tripp Fernandez and Henry Helm; and niece, Rose Garanto.

Growing up on the shores of Lake Michigan, Carl loved fishing, swimming, bird-watching and being near the water. While a student at Michigan State University where he earned an economics degree, Carl was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, a four-year manager of the Michigan State Spartans football team and the U.S. Army ROTC. He was a commission­ed officer and served in France as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Carl was a dedicated employee for Kawneer Company where he retired as Springdale’s plant manager after 37 years with the company.

Carl exemplifie­d the role of a humble servant serving in leadership roles for several community entities. He served on Washington County’s Equalizati­on Board for 20 years, the Literacy Council, as past president of the National Management Associatio­n, as past president and current treasurer of Northwest Medical Center of Springdale’s Auxiliary. A devoted Rotarian, Carl was a past district assistant governor and a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship.

He was an avid sports fan, supporting and cheering often for the Spartans and the Razorbacks.

Above all, Carl loved his Lord, his church and his family. He served its members faithfully in several capacities. He was a student of the Bible with a profound faith that inspired his family and friends. His quiet wit and keen sense of humor were among his most endearing qualities.
