Strasburg done for season

Stephen Strasburg’s season is over. The Washington Nationals transferre­d the star right-hander to the 60-day disabled list Saturday. Nationals Manager Dave Martinez said Strasburg will undergo carpal tunnel surgery later this week. Strasburg, last year’s World Series MVP, was first placed on the injured list Aug. 15 with carpal tunnel neuritis of the right hand. The 32-year-old pitcher signed a seven-year, $245 million contract with Washington during the offseason. He was 0-1 with a 10.80 ERA in two starts in 2020. Strasburg was scratched from his first two scheduled starts, and left his Aug. 14 start after only two-thirds of an inning.

Allgaier earns Xfinity win

Justin Allgaier held off a streaking Austin Cindric to win his first Xfinity Series race of the season Saturday at Dover Internatio­nal Speedway. Cindric had been the driver to beat, coming into Dover with a staggering five wins in the last six races, and he seemed in control after he won the first stage. The 34-year-old Allgaier found his footing in the No. 7 Chevrolet in the second stage and controlled the second half of the race. Allgaier won a combined eight races from 2017-19 but had gone 20 races since his last victory. His win earned him a spot in the Xfinity Series playoffs. Allgaier had been close with four top-five finishes but finally broke through for the checkered flag. Cindric was second, his seventh consecutiv­e two-top finish.

TENNIS

Murray wins in return to court

Andy Murray won his first match in nine months as he resumes his climb back from two hip operations at the first ATP tournament for anyone in five months. Murray earned a 7-6 (6), 6-3, 6-1 victory over Frances Tiafoe at the Western & Southern Open on Saturday. The men’s

tennis tour had been suspended since March because of the coronaviru­s pandemic; the resumption came at a hard-court event moved from its home in Ohio to the site of the U.S. Open, which begins Aug. 31. Murray moved into a second-round test against No. 5 seed Alexander Zverev. Other men advancing Saturday included No. 15 Felix Auger-Aliassime, two-time Grand Slam runner-up Kevin Anderson, Taylor Fritz and Reilly Opelka. The women’s tour returned earlier this month, and among Saturday’s first-round results in New York was No. 13 seed

Elena Rybakina was eliminated by Ekaterina Alexandrov­a 7-5, 7-6 (6), and 18-year-old Amanda

Anisimova beat No. 11 Alison Riske 6-3, 6-3. Two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka defeated No. 15 Donna Vekic for her first tour win in a year, while 40-year-old Venus Williams lost to 20-year-old Dayana Yastremska 5-7, 6-2, 7-5.

FOOTBALL Lineman ‘knocked out’

Seattle Seahawks defensive lineman Branden Jackson was “knocked out” and taken off the field on a backboard as a precaution after being injured during the team’s scrimmage Saturday. Seattle Coach Pete Carroll said Jackson had movement in all of his extremitie­s. The injury happened just before halftime of the scrimmage at CenturyLin­k Field.

Carroll ended the scrimmage after a lengthy break while Jackson was being treated. Jackson was eventually loaded into an ambulance and taken to a hospital as a precaution. Jackson, a fifth-year defensive end, appeared to collide helmets with offensive tackle Cedric Ogbuehi and seemed to be unconsciou­s before he landed on the turf.

Fuller suspended

Backup Seattle Seahawks offensive lineman Kyle Fuller was suspended for the first two games of the season on Saturday for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. Fuller will be allowed to practice with the team during the preseason. Once the regular season begins, Fuller will not be allowed to return to the active roster until Sept. 21, the day after Seattle’s Week 2 game against New England.

Luck leads Korn Ferry

Curtis Luck continues to lead the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championsh­ip in Columbus, Ohio, after firing a 3-under 68. Luck is one stroke in front of Cameron Young, who also shot a 68 on Saturday. Luck is at 11-under 202 after three rounds.

HOCKEY

Stars get past Avalanche

Alexander Radulov had two goals and an assist as the top Dallas line came to life, and the Stars beat the Colorado Avalanche 5-3 on Saturday night to open the second-round Western Conference playoff series. After that top line of Radulov, captain Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin had no points in the Stars’ seven-goal finale in the opening series, the trio com- bined for a goal four minutes into Game 1 against Colorado, and teamed up for another goal in the second period. Hart Trophy finalist Nathan MacKinnon had two goals and had an assist for the Avalanche, who lost top goalie Philipp Grubauer to an injury early in the second period. Game 2 of the best-of-seven series is Monday night.
