Hispanic Heritage Month

This month’s reading list is brought to you by the Springdale Public Library. The library is now open by appointment only. They are offering online story times in English and Spanish, craft tutorials, S.T.E.A.M. videos and more, posted every weekday on their Facebook page. In celebration of Hispanic Heritage month there will be many events, including a bilingual drawing class by Latin book illustrator Taina Almodovar. Don Quixote (Board book) Author: Jennifer Adams Age: Baby to 2 years

This book is a really good way to introduce your toddler to the world of classic literature. Don Quixote is the protagonist of the novel with the same name by Miguel de Cervantes, a classical book from Spanish literature. Opposing panels in each two-page spread give a word and a corresponding image, doing references to the classic story. One in English, the other Spanish. everything is translated, including little talk bubbles. Bilingual book.

Evita/Opposites-Opuestos (Board book) Author: Patty Rodriguez and Ariana Stein Age: Baby to 2 years

Eva Peron’s legacy has inspired many around the world. Better known as Evita, her story started in a small town in Argentina and continued as she used her position as First Lady to fight for women and the working class. With this book children will learn about opposite couplings and their first English and Spanish words, while introducing them to the life of an extraordinary woman. Bilingual book.

I Don’t Want Curly Hair / “No quiero el cabello rizado” (Picture Book) Author: Laura Ellen Anderson Age: Baby-5 years

This book talks about a girl who doesn’t like her curly hair. She goes around talking by herself and thinking why is so terrible to have curly hair and dreaming with to have a straight one. Happen that in the middle of the story appears a girl with straight hair talking about it would be fantastic if she could have curly hair. Both look each other and concluded they are being silly trying to get something that don’t have and not taking advantage about to be different. This book is available in English and in Spanish.

Sing With Me/ Canta conmigo (Picture book) Author: Jose Luis Orozco Age: Baby-6 years

Find here 6 classic songs in English and Spanish. For example the wheels on the bus, the Eensy, Weensy spider and twinkle twinkle little star. Bilingual book.

Salsa Lullaby (Picture Book) Author: Jen Arena Age: Baby–PreK

When nighttime falls, it’s time for baby to go to sleep. In this household, that means it’s also time for mama, papa, and baby to baila/dance, canta/sing, salta/ jump, and more all the way to bedtime!

Just Ask! /¡Solo pregunta! (Picture book) Author: Sonia Sotomayor Age: 4-8 years Feeling different, especially as a kid, can be tough. But in the same way that different types of plants and flowers make a garden more beautiful and enjoyable, different types of people make our world more vibrant and wonderful. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and award-winning artist Rafael Lopez create a kind and caring book about the differences that make each of us unique. This book is available in English and in Spanish. Galápagos Girl / Galapagueña (Picture book) Author: Marsha Diane Arnold Age: 4- 8 years Do you know where is Galápagos Island? This book talks about Valentina, a girl who experiences the joy of growing up among the unique wildlife the Galápagos have to offer, because she is born there. Valentina spends her days observing the natural world around her. She greets sea lions splashing on the shore, scampers over lava rocks and swims with manta rays. The ugly duckling/ “El patito feo” (Picture book/E-book) Autor: Mercè Escardó i Bas Age: Baby-12 years Here’s the classic story of an ugly little duckling teased by the entire barnyard. Embarking on a journey of adventure and discovery, the poor little creature eventually makes a triumphant, heartwarming return to his home. Sofia Martinez: La Receta Secreta (Early Reader) Author: Jacqueline Jules, illustrated by Kim Smith Age: Pre-K-2nd grade Sofia loves to cook and is very excited to help her grandmother make rice pudding using her very secret recipe. Will a small mistake ruin the whole day? Or even worse, will it ruin the church dinner?

Campout - Carlos & Carmen Series (Reader) Author: Kristen McDonald Age: 2nd-3rd grade The Garcias are spending the afternoon at the pool in the park.
