■ Luisa Escudero of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., was reunited with Odin, her 9-yearold bullmastiff, thanks to a friend who spotted her truck at an apartment complex a day after it was stolen from a gas station with the “very sweet” service dog inside.
■ Ada Passmore , 12, of Guntown, Miss., was praised for her calm efficiency when her grandmother fell down the stairs at home, calling 911 and following the dispatcher’s instructions to the point that emergency responders arrived to find the situation under control.
■ Keybo Taylor , elected the first Black sheriff and the first Democrat since 1984 in Gwinnett County, Ga., won’t be chasing bad guys quite yet, as “Currently, I am in quarantine and have decided, in a preponderance of caution, to postpone my swearing-in ceremony.”
■ Travis Samuel Thompson , 26, is charged with cocaine trafficking after the state attorney’s office said he agreed to take $3,000 from an undercover officer to bring the drug into his workplace, the Dade Correctional Institution in Florida.
■ Curtis Woods , 22, of Mobile, Ala., was jailed on an attempted murder charge after police say he stabbed and seriously injured his 2-year-old, with neighbors telling investigators they heard the girl’s mother screaming “No!” before escaping their apartment and calling for help.
■ Robert Brown and Christopher Osteen were arrested in Florida two days after escaping prison in Lake County, Tenn., kidnapping a Kentucky highway department worker and stealing a red 2009 Chevrolet Silverado extended-cab pickup, officials said.
■ Rod Mauldin , a police sergeant in Birmingham, Ala., said a person of interest was in custody but no charges had been announced after the discovery of a decapitated man’s body burning in a vacant building.
■ Cameron Andrews ,a councilman in Centerville, Ga., said the 8,000-person city “has a stellar record of our past [police] chiefs,” and “Yes, that was sarcastic,” as the mayor and council work to hire their fourth chief in five years after departures in November, in 2016 and in 2015.
■ Alejandro Castillo , 53, was “very content” after he and his son managed to pay an early visit to Mexico City’s Basilica of Guadalupe, though the pandemic forced Mexico’s Catholics to largely abandon a pilgrimage there to mark the day in 1531 when the Virgin of Guadalupe is said to have appeared on the nearby hillside.
