Krugman analysis right

-

I hope all readers read the Sept. 4 column “Lobbying for disaster?” by Paul Krugman, Nobel Prize winner for the New York Times. I quote:

“Why does Mickey Mouse want to destroy civilization? OK, that’s probably not what Disney executives think they’re doing. But the Walt Disney Co., along with other corporate titans including ExxonMobil and Pfizer, is reportedly gearing up to support a major lobbying effort against President Joe Biden’s $3.5 trillion investment plan that may well be our last chance to take serious action against global warming before it becomes catastrophic.”

Mr. Krugman goes on to tell us again what is in this bill and how it would help save our planet from severe weather we are seeing around the globe.

Then, he asks the question “Why, then, is corporate America mobilizing against the bill?” And the reason is because Democrats “are proposing to offset new spending partly with higher taxes on corporate profits, and also in using the government’s bargaining power to negotiate lower prices for prescription drugs, thus, Pfizer’s interest.” (Haven’t they made enough money on covid shots?)

We have learned that corporations already don’t pay enough or any taxes, but isn’t this the right time to do the “right” thing for civilization and not the “wrong” thing just to hold down your tax bill?

Mr. Krugman concludes: “Republicans, I fear, are completely unreachable at this point. But corporations and the handful of Democrats tempted to carry their water may still be susceptible to pressure.”

Let us as citizens do something: Write letters, make phone calls, march on Washington!
